and yet many community colleges are curtailing or eliminating career-related courses (in fields where people can go out and earn livings) ... and instead the colleges are trying to send more and more students on to BA degrees (mostly in subjects having little or no career value).
This is explained by “the new pressure from Washington” — that is, the Obama “education” policies.

The author is either a liar, fool or both. The only reason that young people cannot find jobs is government interference in the markets.
Education is part of the free market.
Part of the reason these kids remain jobless is because they enroll in majors like Philosophy, French Literature, or Gender Studies, peppered with BS electives. There should be no surprise they’re still living with Mom and Pop and collecting carts at the local supermarket for minimum wage, while not being taken seriously by any professional HR recruiter.

And yet I STILL hear that you can’t live well without a degree. Not that I have a degree, not am I living well, but it seems pointless when you are fighting for less jobs available.

This to me means the kid wastes his time playing vidio games and will probably do the same if you were to hire him/her.
Yet it is the liberals’ and Obama’s goal for everybody to go to college. They just want to indoctrinate them until they’re 26. There simply are not enough jobs for college grads now, imagine if “everybody” goes to college?
Problem with my generation is they were/are indoctrinated to think that certain jobs are beneath them by the older generation. Also doesn’t help that most employers want someone who is ready made for a position with no training. Job searching is a catch 22 in a lot of cases. You have to have x years experience in x industry to get an entry level job.
There are useful suggestions to be made, unfortunately this article doesn’t make any of them.

When Obama talks about how he wants college for every living American kid, can someone have the freaking guts to ask him, “Why???”
It’s not the 1950s. College does two things to a middle class or lower kid: put him in debt for decades, and indoctrinate him with useless old fashioned communist thinking.
Anyone heading to a university these days should find a very practical useful degree. There are few of them.
What do useless degrees such as “gay studies” and “race in America” qualify one to do other than teach the same crap at another school? Once the market is saturated with “gay studies” teachers (with maybe a few “noted lesbian bondage experts” thrown in), where do these non-value-added fools get work?
