Sandy-hit Shore homeowners ask: "Where is the money?"
Philly.com ^ | 4/1/2013 | Amy S. Rosenberg

Underwater doesn't even begin to get at the heart of Maurice Corkery's predicament.

"This was my summer home," the Delaware County plant manager said of his little rancher on Third Street in Ocean City, N.J., flooded with its foundation cracked - totalled, really - by Sandy.

"I was trying to think of a time line," he said. "It's been so long. I'm so screwed up. I haven't seen any money. Where is the money? All they do is talk about it."

[snip]

"It seems like people who are responsible and have paid for coverage are the losers," he said. "The storm was bad enough. The red tape is a joke."

The stories seem to be everywhere about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) - a month ago, Gov. Christie called its response awful - but FEMA spokesman Dan Watson released statistics last week that showed 94 percent of the state's 73,778 claims had been settled.

The FEMA statistics have at times been at odds with state statistics released previously. In February, Christie said just 30 percent of the flood claims had been settled; FEMA said 50 percent.

The state has since washed its hands of any attempt to run interference with the federally regulated program, state Banking and Insurance Department spokesman Marshall McKnight said. Any complaints the state receives regarding flood insurance now are referred to a hotline FEMA set up after the governor's criticism, 1-800-427-4661

So it is a vacation home, and he is mad the Fedgov won't pay for him to rebuild?

I don't care. I really, really, don't care. When we have floods out here, insurance pays a lot, but not all. We then hold fund raisers, drives, or move up hill.

So if your parents passed their lake home to you would that make you so rich you didn’t deserve to get insurance proceeds from a policy you paid for?

The man has unreasonable expectations......... it was a disaster

He will never be made whole for damages done to a home in a hurricane zone.

It doesn’t happen.

Miami....... beware. It is coming to you, it’s just a matter of time when.

I agree with most of what you said. Insurance isn’t going to pay for everything, but it should pay something. Those who have dealt with FEMA know they stall and offer piddly amounts based on the claim. And I’ve said I have as much sympathy as they showed to other parts of the country when they had natural disasters..... I’m sure you recall all the fund raisers on TV and movie stars/singers doing benefits for Middle America for our damages..... yeah, me either.

yeah right around the missouri river which floods annually, nope don’t expect to be able to build and constantly rebuild at government expense, the flyover zone has people that are smarter than the average east coaster

Government employees must live well up there. They can afford summer houses. And then expect the same taxpayers to remodel them.

To be fair, he could have inherited it.

Also, he was more likely a plant manager who worked or lived in Delaware county; not a government employee.

FEMA came here (Iowa) during the last floods. Lets just say they were not very helpful, or welcome.

The Corp of Engineers, because of their mismanagement, destroyed much of the Missouri river plain for farming. The flood was two years ago, and there is enough sand and grit on the fields that there are dunes forming. It will not be farmed again for a decade.
But they saved the nesting area of a fish. Except they didn’t.

The Missouri river is the only area in general vicinity that is a flood insurance required area?

Well they are the government.....I imagine a bunch of men/women standing around wondering who is in charge and what idiot thing they will be told to do, before someone else comes along and tells them to do it differently, before they pack up and leave the mess behind anyway

I stand corrected. Didn’t read closely enough.

Thought he was whining about federal aid, not the failure to get what he paid for.

DOH!

I asked a couple of time where you were. All you would give me is a river.

So why are folks in Kansas sueing the government for flood damage?

My point was responding to your post back to me.

where I come from people are smart enough not to build where you need federal flood ins

I suspect you lack some information.
