This is from the remnant of the World Church of Tomorrow, herbert W. Armstrong's organization. It is of interest and does pose a couple of the 'big' questions in historiography. Does history have any pattern or is it just one thing after another If there is a pattern can enough people in the right places divine it in a way that enables them to make the right decisions in time?

"What Man Can Learn from History"

"'Never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well known is this: 'Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.'"

Yes, there's a pattern that few are willing to recognize. Thorstein Veblen was the first to figure it out. He saw that institutions have a mind of their own, oblivious to reality and primarily focused on the creating advantages for the leaders of the institutions rather than any of the stakeholders. William L. Livingston III independently rediscovered Veblen's results and reinforced them with the foundational work of Rudolf Starkermann.

Despite the obvious and huge costs to humanity, institutions caused the fall of Rome, the Inquisition, World Wars and Cold Wars, famines, and financial destruction -- and now the decline of the United States of America (not to mention the European Union).

Whether anything can be done about it is another issue. Natural Law drives institutions to their destructive behavior, and ultimately to their own destruction. Until a great many people are educated about the relevant Natural Law, there is no chance that society will do anything to prevent its own destruction.

Well, if things go on as they have done for the last four years, he can learn that, in four more years, America will be a broken - and broke - Africa-style basket case sh*t hole and the rest of the globe a wasteland that glows in the dark.

I couldn’t disagree more with the author’s conclusions. It is precisely the mysticism and irrationalism of religion and of anti reason philosophies such as those of Kant and Plato that are the problem. The author wonders why we have made so much progress in science but can not solve all the social problems. It is because when we deal with nature we use one set of principles and when we deal with man we use another. We would never build a rocket and then launch it and pray that it got there or have faith that it would land where we want it to. We wouldn’t build the rocket based on a feeling or intuition or guidance from the holy spirit. If someone wants to send a probe to Mars then every tiny detail must be taken into account and he or she would have to pay strict attention to the laws of nature which are absolutes.

But when it comes to society and life on earth there are no absolutes except that man himself is the problem. What are men and women taught from their earliest days?: That they are evil by nature, that they must go through life on their knees begging forgiveness for their existence, that their minds are incapable of guiding their actions or knowing right from wrong, that there is a power superior to reason and logic to guide them, That they can know nothing, that they are their brothers keeper, that they exist to serve others whether it be a god or society and that their place is not to question but to obey, that self sacrifice is moral and self interest is evil, that producing wealth and keeping it is evil but giving it to someone else is good and that this world is a realm of misery and that all man’s efforts are doomed to failure. They are taught that you can spend more than you produce and somebody else will provide whether it be god or the state. They are taught that they are owed healthcare, food, a job, a retirement, a house and clothing simply because they exist.

Throughout history mankind has abandoned reason and acted on faith and we see the results. Reason, pride, self esteem, productiveness, self interest, achievement and all of the virtues needed for life are considered evil while humility, poverty, suffering, sacrifice, mystic beliefs, and selflessness are held to be good. It is man’s moral code that are the cause of all the problems and the reason we can’t solve them.
