I do have an answer to this... The Koreans have (supposedly) demonstrated that they can get a couple hundred kilogram payload into orbit. That’s only 4% of the 4000 KG needed to cover the U.S. with an EMP event. Since the effect decreases with the square of the distance... Do the math.
In laymen terms, a horse farting on old McDonald’s farm would be about as effective. It would smell bad locally, but not much else.
My background, BTW, is 33 years with HP as an EE, with a first class FCC license.

Was it not an ESS station?
I thought the battery backup ended with step switch stations.

Much of communications was replaced by fiber op which EMP cannot hurt, unless it can disrupt the original / terminal connections / devices.
I disagree. The metal armor will collect ground currents. I have heard many declarations about radio waves in atmospheric medium, however one of the major effects will be ground currents. Fiber armor will not survive it. JMHEO (Just My Humble Engineering Opinion).

I have a very nice 32S-3 75S-3 Collins Station. Superb old Swiss Watch. With incredible mechanical CW filter. And of course a couple of generators just in case.
I even built a home brew PLL synthesizer for it that gave me general coverage. I used it on my Navy MARS frequencies. Operated under that call from 1976-1995.
Dropped out in 1995 when we moved back to TX from OK. Not sure what year they eliminated MARS altogether.

No argument, but I believe you will understand why I will stick original position to take the work of a actual nuclear scientist and study from Los Alamos over your observations. So I guess we agree to disagree.

Could China give one to the Norks and let them take the blame?

There was a nice exhibit a while back about the early days of Los Alamos. It was very interesting. Place look like a boy scout camp. very primitive, now some of it is like something out of a James Bond Movie.

So, our radios are better protected today than they were in 1990?

I defer to your training and experience.
Thirty three years of ground current work and I am having some "series" and "hugh" heartburn about this. I think it is something to be concerned about. I can only game tellurics on steroids. It is a great unknown. There is however a great pucker factor in regards to it's
potential. No pun intentioned.
I believe someone who says they are going to nuke you with an EMP. You can believe the threat or deny it. The results are an unknown. If real, the future is very ugly. I would not politically take that risk.
I don't know the accuracy of
this. If true, our military is taking it very seriously.
I cannot blow the threat off. Ground current sucks. It will always find it's way to where it wants to go. Water mains, gas lines, URD, grounding, cable, fiber, fencing, guard rails, rail lines and many other modes are it's friend.
