Social conservatives warn Priebus they could abandon GOP

A group of high-profile social conservatives warned Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in a letter this week that their supporters could abandon the GOP if the party seeks to change its position on social issues, particularly same-sex marriage.

Thirteen social conservatives, representing various influential groups, wrote Priebus ahead of the RNC's quarterly meeting this week in Los Angeles to sternly rebuke the conclusions of a post-election report that advised Republican elected officials to adopt a softer tone toward social issues.

"We respectfully warn GOP Leadership that an abandonment of its principles will necessarily result in the abandonment of our constituents to their support," concludes the letter, which was obtained by and independently verified by NBC News in advance of the meeting this week.

The letter further asks GOP committeemen to pass a resolution at their meeting this week re-affirming the party's 2012 national platform, which includes language calling for bans on abortion and same-sex marriage.

Voting for leftist Republicans only adds more leftists to DC. It slows nothing. You can’t slow anything by adding more of it. Basic math.

The GOP grandees dream of a party that doesn’t include us.

And I’d like to find a party that agreed with me.

Is there any issue that the GOP hasn’t caved on? Any principle they haven’t ditched? Fiscal cliffs, debt ceilings, amnesty, now gun control? Add the RNC’s rule changes to freeze out the grassroots, or Boehner’s purging of House conservatives. And Karl Rove’s big-money PAC and its declaration of war on the tea-party folks. Not to mention my own personal, little lingering and seething antipathy over the four-year backstabbing treatment of Palin. Any reason on God’s green Earth that I should ever bother pulling the lever for a Republican ever again? I really don’t see it.

Especially if the Party is now signalling it’s a-ok with the abject deviancy of homo marriage. If the GOP goes this route, I trust it will find the oblivion it so richly deserves.

I am troubled by Republicans “evolving” on gay marriage under the guise of winning the youth vote. For young people, gay marriage is not the #1 issue for them. The “evolving” GOP on gay marriage & amensty is really about multimillionaires opening their wallets to the RNC. A lot wealthy people on the West Coast and East Coast are pro-homosexual and pro-amnesty.

When Reince Priebus was our party chairman here in Wisconsin, we elected Scott Walker and other good conservatives. He has been a much less effective chairmen up at the RNC. Of course the RNC was lost to conservatives before Priebus went there and Romney ran a stink campaign.

I get RNC fundraising letters and I handle them the same as AARP membership requests. I send the post paid envelopes back filled with 2 oz. of waste paper.

Social conservatives warn Priebus they could abandon GOP

I did so in 2007 when, after 30+ years as a registered Republican I registered as an Independent. I refuse to support a party that does not represent my values.

Never going to happen. The GOP does not have a conservative platform; they are too afraid of the NYT and all the other hyphenated names. Nor are these “social conservatives” going anywhere..and Priebus knows it. Sorry, but there you are..

Oh my. A strongly-worded letter.

Demanding a meaningless resolution in support of a now deeply-flawed platform that no one pays any attention to but them anyhow.

Perhaps they could try withholding support from candidates who violate the principles they claim to hold?

It has been interesting to watch this evolution occur here on FR. There were those who crossed this bridge back in 2004...I was not one of them...although I was screaming that Bush was not a conservative. Yet I felt it was necessary to hold my nose and vote GOP.

I did that...and felt proud in 2010...and thought we had accomplished something....until we were stabbed in the back by the GOP-E. So...that day has now passed. I will vote GOP only for my senator Ted Cruz...and locally...but no longer a straight ticket. They will have to earn my vote.

I can only hope the GOP-E has enough sense to have lurkers out here in the hinter land taking the pulse of the base and seeing how disgruntled we all are. I fear, however, they are as clueless as usual...and that 2014 will usher in the end of the GOP majority (even though it should be a landslide given Obamacare's debacle) because I will be very tempted to stay home or lodge a protest vote.

Even though my congresscritter is conservative...he will have to give me assurance that he will vote against Boehner as speaker.

they aren’t doing anything for us. bait and switch. get us first, then go moderate.

they say ‘who else ya gonna vote for?’

i say, if you’re not going to do what we want done, either way we’re not getting what we want. let your precious moderates and liberals elect you over their even more liberal friends.

i think we almost have to adopt this strategy to clean house and get actual conservatives back in seats that are strong and don’t give two/craps about the media or liberals, don’t want to be friends with them, don’t want to compromise with them, but want to fight them at every turn. and when they’re on the run, keep fighting them and making them run back even more.

“However, the GOPe says gun control and amnesty are social issues that can be ignored. “

And that’s just more mucking around with the language. How are gun control (SELF DEFENSE) and immigration reform (secure the borders and maintaining sovereignty) social issues???? HOW??? THEY ARE CONSTITUTIONAL ISSUES! Unlike abortion, gay marriage, entitlements, etc.

Don’t be troubled. Just admit to yourself that the GOP and Dems are the same thing. Because their actions show them to be with everything we have seen in the last year.

Every one of us has a choice. Accept the reality of the situation or continue to live in denial...thus contributing to the demise of America. It’s that simple. This is a VERY black and white issue. You either be part of the problem by continuing to empower the party that works with the Dems to gut American principles and values (The Constitution for starters) or you do not.

Plenty of people since the election have gone through gold medal verbal gymnastics to assuage themselves of guilt and keep their heads buried EVERY TIME one of the idiots in the GOP goes fullmetal liberal.

And we wonder why we are in this mess. When you see something does not work...don’t do that. Simple. So freaking simple. But so many have so many more excuses about why this or that ‘special circumstance’ stops them from doing something different.

Bull. People can act to fix the problem or continue it. Black and white issue.

Very good point; they know real conservatives will never for a Dem so they keep showing us the goat. I have abandoned them, but many wont, and as I said, the GOPe knows this..

The GOP-E gave we socons a thumb in the eye when they foisted Mutt Romney on the American people. I’m sure they’d love to finish the job and drive more of us out of the party.

Romney was my bridge too far. And for once I’ve got the perfect tagline.
