Texas Soldier Arrested for ‘Rudely Displaying’ Weapon
National Review Online ^ | 4/16/2013 | Charles C. W. Cooke

I just got off the phone with Army Master Sergeant. C. J. Grisham, a serving American soldier and veteran of the the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, who recently was illegally disarmed by the Temple Police Department while out for a walk with his son.

“We live out in the country in Texas, near Temple,” he told me. “My son and I were on a ten-mile hike so that he could earn his hiking merit badge – it’s the last badge he needs to become an Eagle Scout.” But half way into the hike, Grisham said, “a police officer pulled up.” Initially, he was “cordial” and he “asked what we were doing.” Grisham told him. “Then he looked at my rifle. I carry a rifle any time I walk around because there are feral hogs and cougars and things like that.”

From here, things took a turn for the worse.

“‘Where you going with that rifle?’ he asked me. I said, ‘does it matter? Am I breaking any laws?’” Then, he says, the officer “grabbed the rifle without telling me – but it was attached to me. My immediate reaction as a combat veteran was to grab it back and then take a step back. I asked him what he was doing. So he pulled his gun on me. Then I thought about my son, so I put my hands off my gun and he told me to move over to the car. Luckily my son had the video camera to document the hike for his merit badge. I told him to turn it on.”

This is the same fellow Michael Yon is having his weird hate with. Does anyone at there know what the dispute is really about? Yon has posted a long rambling diatribe twice that obfuscates more than explains the basis for his grudge match with this man, who to me appears more sinned against than sinner.

“The man should be scolded and given a copy of Texas law to review. His peers should be making him the butt of a few jokes for weeks. Although I would not go so far as to fire him on this occasion.”

Why does an abusive trough feeder in a uniform deserve to keep a job he clearly can’t cope with?

Were an employee of a private company behave in a manner likely to result in a lawsuit, said employee would have his position terminated before the coffee break after management learned of the situation.

The position of reasoned & prudent management is something to the effect of: “If you want to be an overbearing ass, do it on your own time.”

Does it even say who the officer worked for? It left me believing it was the city or state. If that is the case this officer was just unjustifiably ignorant of the law.

He could be a rookie.

Your probably right about that. This officer could have easily ended up killing someone for no good reason. If he had then I think there would be no question about dismissing him from the force, probably even bring him up on charges of his own.

Maybe something in between is appropriated, being ignorant of the law when your a law enforcement officer is not a good thing, it is unacceptable when your enforcing non-existent laws.

Not the way I see it. I see a lot of people here saying they respect the guy’s right to carry a weapon but no one is repecting the way the guy (soldier) is acting like an ass.

I am a huge 2nd amendment supporter, but if someone screws up while supporting it, they need to be called out same as anyone else. We can still say the guy sucks and support his right to carry a gun.

Yon has a lot of problems - from what I’ve heard over the years from people in the know - he has little, if an
y respect from Military members...

If Yon is against you - you must be doing something right

Not sure about Texas, but in a lot of places you can’t carry a rifle ‘in the field’ without a hunting license.

In Texas, no license of any kind was required unless he was "hunting".

Confrontational? If I am a law abiding citizen peaceably exercising my God given rights and someone attempts to take my rifle?

You say you are a former LEO. In your training did you perchance ever happen to hear mention of the Constitution or the Law?

Didn’t think you got irrational and unprofessional moronic *ssholes like this among the cops in Texas.

Guess I was wrong.

This officer crossed the line in my view by taking the weapon since there was no sign of dismay/injuries. Police officers are a mixture of all of us. Some are great, others seem to go into the job for fame about a job while even some go as far as stepping over the law. Some of my best friends and my spouse’s friends are current and retired LEOs. They have a hard job, no doubt. You can watch the video in the first few moments of the interaction, to see what happens on both sides. My spouse got into one of these situations once; the cop wanted to take his rifle. no reason. He didn’t give him the rifle. Words back and forth of the two. Once the sergeant came on the scene, he made the initial officer to back off and to release my spouse.

I’ve had a couple of insane situations with cops acting like nut jobs for absolutely no reason. Those 2 times plus their dog killing propensities has forever made me anti-cop.

i havent met a cop yet that doesnt have an ego, or has the ability to de-escalate an encounter - it all comes down to grinding anyones face in the pavement with a knee to the neck - it was a legal carry...PERIOD - the guy didnt have to provide name or anything - the cop can ask all he wants - doesnt mean he gets answers - but as soon as the ego is bruised - the sadism starts

Theres a little more to this story and it was supplied Monday when he did an interview on the Lynn Woolley show.

A passing motorist called in about a man with a gun and an officer was dispatched. When the officer rolled up the soldier had the AR strapped across the front of his chest and before questioning the officer took the AR from him. It was at that point the soldier grabbed the AR back out of the officers hands, the officer drew his own weapon and held the soldier at gunpoint until another unit arrived. When the other unit arives they then start to cuff him and thats the point the video starts rolling.

While carring the AR across his chest and walking down a public road is not illegal it did draw attention. What got him arrested was when he grabbed the weapon out of the officers hands and thats where the hindering an investigation charge comes in. Had he not done that he would have been questioned and sent on his way.

Well of course. In particular, the 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments, over and over. It’s right before you take penal code. I’m not saying the guy wasn’t within his rights to carry the weapon but it’s appearance would make most officers take notice. You have to take into account that most folks don’t walk around with that type of weapon every day plus the fact that it’s been in the spotlight in the media in the past few months. The officer may have wanted to see if it was fully automatic as well which would have changed its status as to whether it was a legal carry or not.

I don’t know where you got your information there but it does not match the video. First off the AR was still attached to the guy and secondly, the officers weapon is holstered with the strap secured. You think the officer would have reholster his weapon after drawing it?

"It is pretty bad when Police officers don’t know the law. His department should be ashamed of him."

No. His "department" should fire him. And if they don't, then they should be sued until Mr. Grisham owns the town.

Cop is obviously a wannabee jackbooted thug who thinks his badge is a license to do whatever the heck he pleases.
