Tea Party Express Considering Latino-Focused Bus Tour

On Monday, Sal Russo, co-founder of Tea Party Express, the political action committee that sponsored Rand Paul's response to President Obama's State of the Union address, said that his group was considering a nationwide bus tour specifically focused on the Latino community. ..."[t]he bus tour is the iconic symbol of the Tea Party. When we’ve gone to some states, like Texas, we’ve had good Hispanic participation. We’re trying to do a [national] bus tour that would be more directed that way.”

A final decision on whether Tea Party Express will undertake a nationwide bus tour focused on the Latino community has apparently not yet been made.

At the national level, the Republican Party has seen support for its candidates decline within the Latino/Hispanic community over the past decade.

*snip*

The Tea Party movement, which has always had a tense relationship with the Republican establishment, has a stronger track record of engagement with the Latino community.

From the link in the article, Fox News Latino:

The Tea Party group that sponsored a prime-time response last week to President Obama's State of the Union address is the latest group recognizing the power of the Latino vote.

Officials with the Tea Party Express, the nation’s largest Tea Party political action committee, have been discussing their own Latino outreach, said Sal Russo, the group’s co-founder.

“We’ve been trying to do a bus tour that would focus on communities that we don’t normally talk to,” Russo said.

Russo, who worked for Ronald Reagan when he was California governor:

“He believed in going to labor unions, going to places where you don’t normally go, so people could hear his message about cutting taxes and growing the economy,” he said.

*snip*

The plans by the Tea Party, widely viewed by many liberals as being antithetical to the interests and well-being of minorities, follows an announcement last week by House Republicans about a new, ambitious Latino outreach campaign.

On Feb 11, the House Republican Conference, which essentially represents the chamber’s GOP, launched a Spanish-language Twitter account, @gopespanol.

The account is part of a broader plan – still being hashed out – to reach out to Hispanics, and repair their image with them.

*snip*

Not all Republicans and conservatives are on board with the efforts to court Latinos, particularly when it involves relying on Spanish.

Some the most conservative Republicans in the House, for instance, see it as pandering.

In an interview with the National Journal, Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said he is opposed to trying to reach out to Latinos in Spanish.

“There’s a conflicting message that comes out from the Republicans if we want to recognize the unifying power of English, and meanwhile, we send out communications in multiple languages,” said King, who has one of the most hard-line approaches to immigration. “Official business and documents needs to be in English.”

gosh, i wish the GOP, or conservatives had begun to do this before the 2000 election... i even talked about the necessity of it here... not waiting for an election year to do it, but to make it an ongoing thing...

Well they are doing in now.

The TPX and the GOP.

So by election year they should be going strongly.

Newt had a latino site when he was running for prez I noticed.

I'm a mostly reasonable person and willing to lend an ear to rational points well made. That said, I'm skeptical of this "Latino-Focused Bus Tour" and the use of Spanish. Frankly, I see it as an admission of defeat. How so? An admission that assimilation has largely failed and that a once-united America has devolved into a Balkanized constituencies of special interests. From my perspective, Conservatism alone is sufficient. I see no need for such niche marketing to a given ethnic segment. This is America and those who wish to partake in it should thoroughly adopt our values, our language and our cultural norms.

But I'm still willing to listen to a persuasive, logical argument from another perspective. And, in advance, I thank you in advance to taking this on if you're so willing.

Exactly! The Latino/Hispanic voter must need to hear the message even in their own language. All they have been hearing is from the liberals side in their own language how evil the Republicans are, and they hate Mexicans and so on and so on. We must reach out and EXPLAIN to them why we support certain and why we oppose, so they can have a better understanding. The Democraps had the advantage of sending their message it is about time we do the same. Remember fight fire with fire. They need to understand why it is important to speak English, or why it is important to cut taxes, and why the 2nd amendment must be uphold. Those messages must come thru to them in their own language if need be. Remember Mexicans tends to be more socially conservative. Which will be a uphill fight with this gay marriage and abortion so that is one part that is positive. Now they needs to hear the rest and that is not by pandering like street walkers but to rely the real conservative message to them.

I'm hoping to hear back from latina4dubya to provide some arguments that might make me reconsider my stance on this style of Latino outreach. I'll confess that my position is more like that of Steve King, Tom Tancredo or even President Eisenhower with his successful Operation Wetback program in the 1950's.

As for the social conservatism of Mexicans, what are your thoughts on this recent thread? Natural Conservatives? Really?

for now, since it is 2:30 in the morning here, i will just say this: i agree with just about everything you posted... and in order to share that message, it may be that it must be shared in a language other than English... i get that you see it as admitting defeat... i see it as seizing an opportunity... doing what you can with what you are dealt... and it may be that most of those in this particular audience don't ever learn English... but perhaps they will see how important it is for their children to learn English... to learn to be American... in my opinion, to do no outreaching at all is admitting defeat...

i can discuss this further tomorrow... (actually, later today)... and i do appreciate your willingness to listen... your "reasonability."

So the TPX is now going to engage in some Latino pandering?

Complete waste of time and resources.

Yes, indeed it's late (or early) for both of us. I'll be looking forward to a hopefully mutually rewarding give and take with you after we both get some much needed rest.

Take care until we chat again! And thanks much.

They need to understand why it is important to speak English, or why it is important to cut taxes, and why the 2nd amendment must be uphold.

All they care about is taking advantage of whatever entitlement benefits they can mooch off of. They have no desire for assimilation. As far as speaking English, good luck. Where I live in suburban Chicago, we have so many Spanish signs it looks more like Mexico. And I can tell you from a few people I know that work in the city government that it has now gotten to the point where they realize that non-hispanic-owned businesses are not willing to come here. Believe me when I say it has become a big problem that many have whispered about, but will never be admitted publicly. How they plan to solve it, I have no clue, but good luck to them!

One more thing, talk to any school district that is spending a ton of money on ESL programs. Ask them if they like it when most, if not all, districts are struggling with funding. Remember Mexicans tends to be more socially conservative.

Absolute BS.

Come here in suburban Chicago and take a look at my local high school which is more than 75% hispanic and you will notice that well over half of the girls there are pregnant. It has gotten so bad that there is now a day care center in the school.

More hispanics than ever support gay marriage as well.

Part of me is furious at what is going on. But another part of me is laughing. The GOP would never have had this problem with hispanics if the leadership displayed a hint of common sense and secured the border. Reagan granted amnesty and there was no groundswell of hispanic support. Bush 41 and 43 did nothing to stop illegal immigration. After 9-11 I thought at the very least our borders would have been sealed, but no. Since the GOP is so closely tied with the business community (and their desire for cheap labor), they are all too willing to look the other way and ignore the problems as long as politicians receive their campaign contributions (or as I like to call them, "bribes") from their business friends.

Then what happens when amnesty is passed and the democrats get 20 million new voters, no increase in hispanic support for the GOP as they lose their base out of disgust? What will the GOP say? I doubt they will admit they made a mistake. They could care less. They will have their money and will live comfortably in their gated communities as they one-by-one lose office.

Sounds like Tea Party Amnesty

These “reaching out to Latinos” means: 1. Amnesty. 2. Amnesty and welfare. 3. Amnesty and, welfare, and unicorns

Hyphenated Americans is an anathema to freedom and liberty!

This is more pandering to special interest groups over others and ruinous for this so-called TEA Party group.

Either we are all special as taxpaying Americans or we are just another wing of the Democratic Party.

Can't have it both ways.

"hear in their own language?"

Pardon me but isn't their own language the same as ours?

Are we so eager to split America into groups like the Democrats do, and what exactly are we going to tell "them in their own language?"

Are we planning on telling "them in their own language" how much free stuff we want to offer them?

Hispanics here legally as citizens already have to know English, or at least they used to, so if we have to resort to buses catering to "them in their own language (and how insulting is that anyway), we aren't attempting to reach out to citizens but illegal aliens hoping to become citizens through Amnesty!

Karl Rove must surely be running the TEA Party Express these days!

Why yes...that's it!!!! Just organize some sort of tour of Hispanic citizen's sections, explain to them the merits of a limited-government society...AND THEY WILL FLOCK TO THE REPUBLICAN BANNER IN DROVES!!!! Or maybe they won't. Maybe most of them don't want limited government. Maybe they're like the black students at the Rand Paul speech at Howard U. who expect government to do all sorts of things for them. Then what? Pander? Yes, we Republicans will give you things...just not quite as many as the Democrats. Sure...that will work fine. (snicker)

Incidentally, I was watching a bit of Ted Baxter aka Bill O'Reilly last night, and Ted was almost apoplectic with some Republican senator or congressman who failed to understand that Republicans should be pandering to the Hispanic community. The Pubbie congressman told Baxter er O'Reilly the same things we're talking. O'Reilly recited the lie about Hispanics not voting for Pubbies because of the immigration issue, and the Pubbie told him he was wrong. Baxter's position was: so what...pander anyway.
