Rand Paul: The Only Way To Stop These Shootings Is To End Gun Free Zones
Real Clear Politics ^ | Tim Hains

Posted on 04/20/2013 5:48:01 PM PDT by JohnPDuncan

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) discusses gun control and background checks with Geraldo Rivera on his radio show and takes calls from listeners.

PAUL: This grief is just an unbearable burden. I think people are politicizing and trying to take advantage. Politicians are taking advantage of peoples' grief. And it makes me even sadder to see, gosh this person lost their five year old son, their six year old son, and they're being put as pawns in the middle of a political debate that's been going on for years. And really, one of the the only ways I can think of o stop these shootings is to announce tomorrow that there wont be gun-free zones in schools.

I certainly agree about one thing: that any legislation should be limited to a few pages stating in plain English what they propose to do.

Thanks for your reply!

The bastards have us in a tough spot. If we block the crap sandwich we get called racist or insufficiently with the hispanics.

We might be able to stop it in the House. It’s not clear whether we can or not so keep up the pressure on members of congress.

However i’m still afraid Obama will be talking about this non-stop for years and years and using it at HIS issue.

I think the GOP are trying to find a way to neutralize this sophisticated attack the best they can without selling out.

I dont think Rubio or Flake is helpful by agreeing to this bill which is horrible and must be modified because i dont see the House taking it up.

Rand is trying to make sure the message is not lost to the hispanics. if he votes against it he wants them to know he’s still with them and listening to them because he’s hoping to fight a national election in 4 years.

This doesn’t mean he supports giving in to everything they want but he does support some process for them.

If this is disappointing to you then I dont know what to say... This is coming whether we like it or not and Obama is going to run on this day and night and keep demanding it.

I dont think it can be blocked.

The House are saying they want to pass standalone bills rather than one big monstrous package.

I think this is a good strategy but the danger is Obama doesn’t sign them and demands “COMPREHENSIVE REFORM” and screams “GOP IS BLOCKING IT!”

I’m sick of him but this is what Washington is reduced to.

JohnPDuncan,

The repubs need to grow a pair — seriously. Either you stand for something or you die for nothing to quote John Rambo in Rambo IV.

I am all for adept politics, but sometimes you have to go down swinging. Although, in this case, I don’t think it’s inevitable that this bill or something like has to pass. I do think it will happen if repubs don’t start fighting back and taking it to the democrats. The repubs need to listen the likes of Ben Shapiro and the folks at Breitbart, “Attack, attack, attack.” President Obama does not have anybody or anyone group’s best interests at heart. He is a cold, conniving politician. We should take the fight to him. I am sick and tired of people not challenging him on his frequent political gaffes and fundamental philosophical inconsistencies or inaccuracies. Really, the repubs are worse than Neville Chamberlain claiming they will have an agreement for peace. It’s war. The democrats have declared war on the repubs and traditional America. If you plan to go all moderate, Romney-like, you will lose.

I live in Texas. I am surrounded by Mexican Americans. I get along with them fine. Many are repubs/conservatives. You know why a sizable group of them are not dems? Because they believe in traditional things, like guns, are willing to work hard to make money, etc. Heck, most of them resent illegals coming over border as much as I do, There are plenty of hispanics, asians, etc. who share this view of illegal immigrants. These people just want to make sure that you are not going to talk down to them or discriminate against them. This just takes straight talk on the part of the repubs. Reject the dems reality and substitute your own. Take the fight to the dems and the President.

First things first, you must put the breaks on this monstrosity of jail house love. There are many reasonable ways to slow this down and expand debate. Here are a few:
1. Terrorism and national security
2. Need to study issue for best results
3. Need to open debate and public feedback

Repubs need to stop quivering in their boots. They can win this fight both in Congress in the eyes of the public, but they won’t do so without even putting up a fight. They had better stop this violation of our republic or die in a grotesque and honorable way trying to stop it. If they don’t fight the good fight on this issue, I will be registering independent.

Recent events might slow this down. Sad but true.

However like I say people like Rubio and Flake make it difficult. McConnell cannot stop this in the Senate if these folks are backing this ridiculous bill.

So it goes to the House. Pressure your TX delegation. They’re usually reliable.

You seem like a nice fellow, John.

However, right now, we have to fight. Reject their labels and throw it back at them.

We need a Chesty Puller and a couple dozen John Basilones running around Congress kicking butt and taking names. Ted Cruz is doing a fine job representing Texas. We need others to do the same. Fight, fight, fight like there is no tomorrow because if this passes, we will wake up to a different country and not a better one either.

I would like that, that they never can vote unless they go back to their country and apply for green card like everyone else.

The question is...is it possible to pass such a bill?
In my honest opinion it will not pass until republicans control 65 seats in senate and 65% in House because there will always be some mushy republicans.

In life what we wish and what we can get are not always identical. Realists accept whatever best they can get. Dreamers die dreaming. Right now I am willing to settle what is possible. If a favorable congress is elected in less than 10 years along with the president, then the law can be changed. Any law can be changed. Even the constitution has amendments.

Republicans can grow 4 big brass ones and that don’t mean shyt when Obama is the president and senate has democrat control. Like I said, continuing with the present situation of 12-30 million illegals WITH NO BORDER CONTROL is unacceptable. If the proposed bill has closing the border as #1 priority with checks, only then I can support it because it will at least reduce the flow of illegals. They are coming every day unabated.

If by border control it is meant that there will be no wall and no extra people, then it is more of the same — no border control.

We can win this battle. The only reason we lost the election was that many people just did not like Romney. Democrat class warfare mud stuck and Romney was “moderate” for most of his campaign, especially in the final stages of the campaign even after decisively beating Obama in the first debate. Appeasing la Raza, Univision, and Marco Rubio will not save our party nor our country. It will have the exact opposite effect on the party and who knows what the long term effects of a general amnesty will be on our country. Whatever they will be, they won’t be to our liking.

Oh, by the way, that figure of 12-30 million illegals...with family members .... that will be 30-50 million more newly legalized illegals (equal to 1/5 or 1/6 our current population), un-acculturated and, for the most part, poorly educated, voting and doing whatever newly legalized former illegals do.

We must fight this with all our might.

John isn't here to fight Amnesty, he's here to pimp Rand Paul, even when he offers Amnesty as his plan to reform Immigration.

Wrong.

I will fight this bill all the way.

It’s just not going to be fought in the Senate because the votes aren’t there. Not when 4 GOP are already voting for it.

They have the votes clearly.

Rand Paul: The Only Way To Stop These Shootings Is To End Gun Free Zones.

Does that include the U.S. Capitol?

Problem: Obama then screams day and night about 2nd class citizens.

Check mate.

We’re dealing with a nasty, lying POS.

Yes we are dealing with a nasty, lying POS. However, those in this country without a "green card" are ineligible to apply for citizenship. Those here on a student visa, for example, cannot apply for citizenship. However, as soon as you grant permanent residency to someone, then they have a path to citizenship automatically.

Therefore a new immigration status needs to be created called "Permanent Guest Worker" and we can hand out those "Blue Cards" or whatever to the Illegals who are living here. Gives you the right to live in this country, come and go as you please, pay taxes, etc., but cannot apply for permanent residency (or by extnesion citizenship) unless they surrender their "blue card" and return to their own country to apply for permanent residency through the legal channels like everyone else. No changes to the permanent residency laws need to be made.

Brings the illegals "out of the shadows" (as if they're currently hiding while applying for drivers licenses, welfare benefits, and in state tuition at universities) while not creating tens of millions of new Democratic voters. No changes to the citizenship laws need to be made because they are already geared to permanent residents. This new immigration status won't be a permanent residency, but permanent guest worker.

Then after this program is established, we really crack down on arrest, detainment, and deportation of anyone without a valid visa (green card, the new "blue card," or temporary work, tourist, or student visa.) That's where you'd have to trust the POS who is POTUS. None of this would happen for several years, so we'd have to trust Hilda Beast Clintoon...

This is an interesting proposal and maybe you should try and get this to some congressman to put forward.

Unfortunately Obama is a petulant child and won’t sign anything he (or his Party) doesn’t like.

Then he’ll rant and rave forever about GOP blocking the crap he wants.

He’s pathetic.

>And really, one of the the only ways I can think of to stop these shootings is to announce tomorrow that there won't be gun-free zones in schools.<

The day after Newtown, I was ready to go to my grandson's elementary school with my concealed handgun and sit in the teachers' lounge -- and ready to organize other dads (and moms) to do the same -- one morning a week; one afternoon a week.

But MI law PROHIBITS guns in schools. Oh well! So our precious kids continue to be sitting ducks.

WILL THIS INSANITY EVER END!?!?!?!

Yeah, that was pretty much what I was saying. Permission to work here, but not a path to citizenship outside of the normal process. I don’t like the idea. It’s still a foul sandwich.

It really doesn’t matter because these blue card holders will have all the perks of citizenship and they will be voting if they haven’t already. Remember, the debate over state id? They will have it and no one will force them to put a blue card hold designation on their ids.

I am just tired of repubs acting timid all the time. Demographically, things are going to change. There is no doubt about that. So, repubs will have to appeal to a wider group of people. This can be done without violating our principles. They just got to fight and stop being on the defensive. If the repubs don’t slow this process down, the sandwich, in all its inedible qualities, will be force-fed to us.
