You might have been exposed to the Flowering Pear - Pyrus calleryana - which has a potent smell of carrion (dead, rotting meat), and is pollinated by *flies*, and not by bees or butterflies.
The flies smell the carrion 'fragrance' and are attracted to it. It's the only plant with such a potent, powerful smell. I hate the damned things, personally.
They're way over used by builders as yard and street trees, grow fast, are weak wood and fall apart in ice and snow storms (especially the lousy Bradford Pear). There are several cultivars which are good: Cleveland Select, Aristocrat, Redspire and a few others.
This is a Flowering Pear, with similar flowers to the Flowering Cherry, but important diffs, as noted above:

Bradford Pear trees have been banned in some southern coastal areas, where they’ve become known as “Bradford tumbleweeds.” They’re very soft and have an annoying habit of snapping off at ground level during hurticanes, then rolling down the street, breaking out windows and damaging cars.

They’re very soft and do not bear fruit. They bloom profusely but the scent is not pleasant. They’re so soft they routinely split right down the middle of the trunk in a thunderstorm, looks like two giant broccoli florets laying on the ground. They’re junk trees, popular in the nineties, developers loved them because they were very fast growing.
Bradfords are the worst damned trees ever foisted upon the public by the nursery industry. Fast growing, weak wood, susceptible to breakage between 10-15yrs, just as they’re looking good.
Soft and brittle wood from growing so fast. Plus, all main branches come out from a central point (whorl) about 3-4ft up the trunk. That's the weak point and where they break-off.
The other cultivars - Cleveland Select, Aristocrat, Redspire etc - last 30-40yrs, because the lateral branches are spread evenly up the main trunk, and taking pressure off that break-point on the Bradford.

nextgen is a new set of technology and rules being phased in to make routes more direct and fuel efficient - it is a decades long implementation - funding is from the faa and it was increased this year - and NOT cut by the sequester
all the air traffic control towers closed are NOT government union employees - they are contracted out to private companies and (surprise) operate at a fraction of the cost of union leech towers
while my guys see absolutely zero problems closing those towers, the fact remains that obama does not know that - and he is willing to endanger citizens’ lives to push his political agenda - an accident at the airport - should one happen - almost is certain death
and yes - i know of one tower closing that we somewhat regularly use - tuscaloosa, alabama
the phased closing schedule was abandoned - and now all the towers will close on the same day - may 1 i think
