A Tribute to Matt Bracken (known on Free Republic as Travis McGee)

Matt aboard steel yacht that he built

During the last frantic battle to defend the Constitution against those who despise its limitations on government action, one name stands out among Freepers. That name is Matt Bracken, or his freeper screen name, Travis McGee.

Matt recognized the immensity of the challenge immediately. This is not new to him, he has been among the foremost in sounding the alarm about the creeping police state that we find ourselves in. His superb dystopian novels in the Enemies Foreign and Domestic trilogy and his top of the line action/adventure novel Castigo Cay are loud warnings of the severe challenges that our faltering constitutional republic faces.

I recall Matt's grim prognostication back in December: We were going to lose, and lose big. I was nowhere near as optimistic as I had been just a year ago. I thought we could win... but only if we fought, and fought hard. Many thought that we had already lost.

Matt did not complain about the odds. He did not hesitate to join the fight because the foe was numerous, well armed, well organized, and had carefully chosen his place of conflict.

Matt laid aside his well reasoned forecast and wholeheartedly joined the fight. He rallied the troops. He launched literary nuclear strikes into the enemies' rear areas. He day by day created effective munitions for all of us to use, and used them himself.

He has been tireless, energetic, and resourceful.

All of this has come at a cost. Matt makes his living by writing and selling his novels. I doubt that there are as many self-published writers of fiction that make a living at it as there chambers in a S&W revolver.

His time, energy and creative skills are his stock in trade, and he gave unselfishly to our battle from those resources. He has no federal deep pockets to fund him or leftist sugar daddies like George Soros. He takes on the leviathan with little but mental agility, truth, and will.

I know Matt as a man of honor and a patriot. He served as a Navy Seal.

Matt would never write as I have about himself. I do not think it is in him to do so.

But, it needs to be said, and I do not know who else will do the job.

I am sure that others will be able to write of Matt's accomplishments far more eloquently than I. Please do so. We need to honor our comrades who deserve it, and Matt is one who greatly deserves it.

I have bought cases of Matt's books. I have never been disappointed.

To Matt, freeper Travis McGee, you are a warrior to be reckoned with in these battles to preserve liberty.

If we had a thousand like you, we need not fear the outcome. May others see your example and follow your lead.

And Matt; I am eagerly waiting for your next novel. I will buy a case when it comes out. May this interlude allow you to write it!

I know the war is not over. It may never be over. But we have won a great battle, and one of our most effective warriors has been Matt Bracken, Navy Seal, Sailor, Author, Seer, Father, and Freeper.

Wear your cammo 24/7 and make sure you are packing whenever you step off the front step. No, I take that back. Stay away from the front step. Exit and enter the house from the back door only. Change your numbers on the house and the mailbox. Get remote start for the vehicles. Move the boat to a different harbor and repaint it and the vehicles a different color. Change hats more often but whatever you do keep writing those great books for us anxious readers.

Stay safe

Marktwain, thanks for posting this.

Travis - thank you for your service, your Patriotism, FRiendship, and continuing, unswerving dedication to the cause of American Liberty.

You’ve “made a difference” in many lives whether you know it or not.

God bless ya, brother.

Maybe I should follow your lead and give Matt advice on how to write.... Not. B4Ranch, if I start asking you for pictures, you have had a heads up.

I guess there is no controversy in honoring one of our best.

Less than 100 posts on a tribute to Matt Bracken, our own Travis McGee?

I thought I would get a few more “I remember when Travis wrote” posts.

A coal mine canary isn’t much use if he’s hiding in a safe place.

I don't care if I am late to this thread; I'm sticking my two cents in as well. And Matt is a true American hero.

Almost weekly there are threads from many different sources theorizing how the sudden and widespread collapse of America will happen and what will happen when it does. Some are great. Some are moon battery. But among the best ever is one of Matt's. I've bookmarked it and refer to it frequently:

When The Music Stops – How America’s Cities May Explode In Violence
Western Rifle Shooters Association ^ | September 4, 2012 | Matt Bracken

Posted on Tuesday, September 04, 2012 7:37:03 AM by Travis McGee

In response to recent articles in mainstream military journals discussing the use of the U.S. Army to quell insurrections on American soil, I offer an alternate vision of the future. Instead of a small town in the South as the flash point, picture instead a score of U.S. cities in the thrall of riots greater than those experienced in Los Angeles in 1965 (Watts), multiple cities in 1968 (MLK assassination), and Los Angeles again in 1992 (Rodney King). New Yorkers can imagine the 1977 blackout looting or the 1991 Crown Heights disturbance. In fact, the proximate spark of the next round of major riots in America could be any from a long list cribbed from our history.

We have seen them all before, and we shall see them all again as history rhymes along regardless of the century or the generation of humankind nominally in control of events. But the next time we are visited by widespread, large-scale urban riots, a dangerous new escalation may be triggered by a new vulnerability: It’s estimated that the average American home has less than two weeks of food on hand. In poor minority areas, it may be much less. What if a cascading economic crisis, even a temporary one, leads to millions of EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards flashing nothing but zeroes? Or if the government’s refusal to reimburse them causes supermarket chains to stop accepting them for payment? The government can order the supermarkets to honor the cards, but history’s verdict is clear: If suppliers are paid only with worthless scrip or blinking digits, the food will stop.

STEP ONE: FLASH MOB LOOTING

More. Much more...
