What Should We Do about Guns?
nationalreview.com ^ | 1 May, 2013 | John Lott

After the defeat of the Manchin-Toomey background-check bill, and the subsequent demonization of the Senate, Senators Manchin and Toomey are reportedly back at work on bipartisan legislation addressing gun control. John R. Lott, author of the new book At the Brink, who has been researching gun policy for decades, talks about the state of the debate with National Review Online’s Kathryn Jean Lopez.

Kathryn Jean Lopez: Gabby Giffords has accused the Senate of being in the grips of the gun lobby. Is there another explanation for the defeat of the Manchin-Toomey bill?

JOHN R. LOTT: Yes, there is. The politicians were simply representing the voters in their districts.

The accusation that politicians were attempting to please the gun lobby at the expense of their constituents, which is based on the oft-repeated assertion that 80 to 90 percent of the public say they favor background checks, is simply not credible. The survey questions on which this statistic is based proved nothing more than that respondents wished to disarm criminals. The questions posed were about a hypothetical, idealized system of background checks, not about the actual legislation facing Congress.

A better survey was recently released by the Pew Research Center. It asked: “What word best describes how you feel about the Senate voting down new gun control legislation that included background checks on gun purchases?” Many voters were upset that the bill didn’t pass, but a very substantial group were relieved. Overall, 47 percent were disappointed and 39 percent were relieved. Not surprisingly, opinions varied drastically across political affiliation. Among Republicans, 51 percent were relieved and 34 percent were disappointed. Among independents, the split was 48 percent relieved and 41 disappointed. In sharp contrast, only 22 percent of Democrats were relieved, while 67 percent were disappointed.

I know several people who told me that Senators were bought by the NRA, which is funded by gun manufacturers. I did some research that I shared with them that most the NRA money comes from members.

They just don't want to believe that real people got their way. They want to believe that evil blood money was what caused the vote to go against their wishes.

You don't need to go back to Victorian times. Just look at an average town in Switzerland today. I recently was looking at some photos of and information about my great-grandmother's place of birth there in the canton of Glarus (over to the east, not far from the Austrian border).

Reading the local news website for that area was like peering back through the mists of time. Clicking on "police and crime" in the sidebar brought up mostly a collection of stories about traffic accidents. No murders, no rapes, no muggings. Oh, and the cantonal Schützenfest is sponsored by a *brewery*.

yea I read it this am...good info and polling data- I’m personally concerned about some of the ceded ground (which my state and others are staking back out).

Guns are tools, for right or wrong; they are equalizers, defenders of the poor and bulwarks against abuse by government or criminals.

Cherish them, maintain them, and train the next generation in their proper use.

Thank you very much!

P.S. And NEVER give up your guns.
That will be the absolute end.

More than that, one thing I’ve noticed is that Letters of Marque issued by the United States may reference a private ship that is already armed with cannon, but doesn’t authorize it.

In other words, private American citizens used to be able to buy cannon without a background check.

The other side needs to stop shooting their mouths off.

Just today I had to hear “The gun nuts are making pink guns for first timers”.

So Friggin Stoopit and said to get a rise of me.

Didn’t bother to answer the challenge and illuminate him on just how long chicks have been buying pinkgunz

“In other words, private American citizens used to be able to buy cannon without a background check.”

We could buy cannon and the ammo for them without hindrance up until 1968. I remember, having lived during the time you could see the ads in the American Rifleman. I am talking about anti-tank guns and anti-aircraft guns and ammo. There were no crimes committed with them, but Johnson wanted them outlawed, and he did.

We still can buy muzzle loading cannon without hindrance, for the most part.

What we should do about guns? How about making them less expensive and do the same for ammo!

What to do about guns?
1. Repeal all laws restricting the sale and/or posession of firearms. Yes, even to convicted fellons. If they have served their sentence then they should be considered in good standing unless they commit another crime. The crooks don’t pay attention to the law any way.
2. Conduct mandatory arms training in the public schools grades K-12.

Take good care of your guns.

reload if possible.

better yet upgrade to better optics, better or more specifc calibers.

And ultimately upgrade technologically.

In some discussions many suggest we not scoff at the eventuality of a hostile alien invasion from OTHER than outside our borders.

Then we need SUPERIOR firepower, even EXCEEDING that of our military.

Like really good efficient flamethrowers for instance, everybody should have an assault flame thrower.

Hundreds of years in the future what weapon kills more aliens?

Yuuup, its the flame thrower.

My lib sources told me that guns just get up and start shooting people.

Interesting, isn't it?? SUVs also cause their own accidents, NOT the people driving them!!
