Parents Rally to Save Classroom Breakrasts
LA Times ^ | April 30, 2013 | Teresa Watanabe

Union officials representing school cafeteria workers led a noisy rally of parents Tuesday to save a Los Angeles Unified classroom breakfast program that feeds nearly 200,000 children but was in danger of being axed after sharp criticism by teachers.

Earlier this month, the teachers union posted a video and online poll findings showing that more than half of 729 respondents said the classroom breakfast program had increased pests, created messes and consumed an average of 30 minutes of instructional time per day. That lost time, the union said, amounted to eight school days.

He said United Teachers Los Angeles had complained that serving breakfast in the classroom, rather than before school in the cafeteria, took up too much instructional time and created messes.

A noisy rally by parents who feel it's the schools job -- and not theirs -- to feed their children breakfast in the morning.

Imagine that.

What?
The schools serve breakfast 30 minutes before the first bell, how does that interrupt instruction time?
Oh, wait the teachers don’t care the kids maybe hungry, because they may be inconvenienced.

Our district have free breakfasts before school. It wasn’t to feed the poor starving widdle children but to hopefully gain an extra few points on state testing scores. The breakfasts are full of carbs which kids like (pancakes, donuts, toast and jelly, chocolate milk) but they MUST take a piece of fruit. Of course, the fruit ends up in the trash.

God forbid, the parents could feed the kids at home.

Where I live, the schools (taxpayers) provide breakfast and lunch even when school is not in session...like summer vacation. It’s an outrage.

Serving children breakfast in the classroom. Hell, you can't take donuts and coffee to a professional office without them making a 30 minute cleanup mess.

Count me out of that. You want to eat? Come to the dining hall in uniform during service hours.

So the parents get to sleep in and let the school feed their kids.

How about the parents feed their own children before they get to school.

I remember the good old days, when it was up to the family to provide for their children. Breakfast was at home. You could either bring lunch, or buy lunch at school, and those decisions were always made based on the menu calendar. Pizza day was ALWAYS buy lunch day.

I know what they said, and I am saying breakfast is served before school not during school.
They are union teachers, they are not truthful.

Agreed.
At my grandkids school, they can not bring home lunches, and if you receive “free’ lunches, you are also signed up for the ‘free breakfasts’, my guess parents just say eat at school.
It all sucks.......

“One mother, Janet Torrez, said her two sons prefer to eat at school rather than at home but that a previous before-school meal program didn’t work because the children chose to play instead.”

From the article.

That is ridiculous too. I would not send my children to a school were they were required to eat a school lunch. I always packed their lunches and they ate breakfast at home.

Somewhere between breakfast and midrats?

Where is all their welfare foodstamp money going? If those lazy losers don’t have to feed their spawn, deduct the cost of 20 breakfasts and 20 lunches from their WELFARE per month.

Sign at rally:” Learning Starts With Breakfast.”

!

How about-—responsibility starts with feeding your own kids? Besides, I assume most of these people are getting food stamps. What are they for?

Not everyone of the families who receive free lunches are welfare or spawn or lazy......some people just need help for a few weeks.
