Russian intelligence and the Boston Marathon bombing

The claim that the Russians somehow “warned” the U.S. about Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s radical Islamic connections has been accepted by most news organizations and commentators as established fact. But while U.S. intelligence agencies have a lot to explain, the Russian security services have been treated with kid gloves and even as the “good guys” in this affair.

Russian media, including the English-language propaganda channel Russia Today (RT), have been insisting that the U.S. is to blame for the Boston bombings because vague “warnings” from Moscow were ignored. Boston-Marathon-Explo_Horo-13-e1366502918189 It is reminiscent of when Lee Harvey Oswald, a pro-Castro Marxist who had traveled back and forth to Russia, assassinated President John F. Kennedy, and the Russian KGB promptly launched a disinformation campaign in the media blaming right-wingers in Dallas and the CIA for the murder. [snip]

The US has much more in common with Russia than with most other countries. Russia has a big problem with Islamic fundamentalists in Chechnya and within their own borders. The intelligence they gathered on this American jihadist was quite good. The politically correct manner in which Federal agencies handle this information is what is at fault here. BTW as China seeks hegemony over Asia, either the US pulls out entirely (which it should) or a rational post Obama America teams up with a resurgent German-Russian axis.

Litvenenko converted to islam some time before he died. That doesn’t automatically mean that some or all of his claims are untrue, just suspect, IMHO. I have no doubt that Russia was brutal in Chechnya, but that doesn’t excuse the demonic actions of many islamofacist ‘soldiers’ either.

Thanks for posting this, I always value reading Kincaid’s perspective. One sobering thought I have after reading this is that, wherever the truth in the Tsarnaev case lies, in general, the Obama administration likely lacks sufficient counterintelligence capability to discern Russian cooperation from propaganda. Likewise on anything China tells them about North Korea. Intelligence—in any sense of the word—is not this administration’s strong point.

What would you expect the Russians to do?

Have diversity training classes?

No, just stop indiscriminately shelling every building whether it housed civilians or not.

Lessee, do we trust the MSM, American intelligence, Jamestown, Russian intelligence, CAIR, Cliff or our lyin' eyes?

Interesting, the supposed need to frame Islamists for events of Islamic terror.

You expect them to politely knock and ask if there are terrorists at home?

A trust gap remains between U.S. and Russian intelligence services, former Cold War rivals. U.S. officials said they consider counterterrorism information from Moscow's bitter conflict with Islamic militants in Chechnya and other parts of the volatile north Caucasus especially suspect.

A little more than three years ago top Boston FBI agent Richard DesLauriers, the same man running the bombing investigation, took part in an FBI operation code-named "Ghost Stories" in which 10 people were rounded up because the United States believed they were Russian spies.

Two of those people, Donald Heathfield and Ann Foley, were arrested in Cambridge, Massachusetts, about a mile west of the house the Tsarnaevs lived in. All 10 were handed over to Russia in a carefully choreographed exchange for four Russians who had been jailed for working for western governments. - Boston bombing suspect in prison, brother's body unclaimed

The obvious question in this case is: If the Russian intelligence agencies were suspicious of the brother’s terror ties, why did they not arrest and imprison him?

Through social network monitoring in late 2010, Russian officials noted ties between increasingly radical Tamerlan and William Plotnikov, a Russian born Canadian boxer, Islam convert and member of the terrorist organization Caucasus Emirate in Dagestan. Jan. 12, 2012, Tamerlan flew to Russia. His father, Anzor claims he stayed with him at the family home in Dagestan the whole time but Anzor wasn't there most of the time. July 14, 2012, Plotnikov was one of several insurgents killed in a battle with Russian security forces. Russia speculated Tamerlan may have been involved with Plotnikov so were searching for him but he flew out of the country two days later.

War is hell... remember that...

The Russians could have wiped them out completely... Russian military operations are not my problem, I’m concerned with our own and the US borders...

Pick up a rifle and go tell them about it, leave me out of it.

You think there weren’t times during WWII where we fought like “animals” against the Japs and Nazis?
