Rhode Island on Thursday became the nation's 10th state to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed, as a 16-year effort to extend marriage rights in this heavily Roman Catholic state ended with the triumphant cheers of hundreds of gays, lesbians, their families and friends.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed the bill into law on the Statehouse steps Thursday evening following a final 56-15 vote in the House. The first weddings will take place Aug. 1, when the law takes effect.
"I've been waiting 32 years for this day, and I never thought it would come in my lifetime," said Raymond Beausejour, a 66-year-old gay North Providence man who has been with his partner for 32 years. "For the first time in my life, I feel welcome in my own state."
After Chafee signed the bill, the hundreds of people who gathered on the Statehouse grounds erupted into cheers as a chorus sang "Chapel of Love."
"Now, at long last, you are free to marry the person that you love," Chafee told the crowd.
The day was bittersweet for Deborah Tevyaw, whose wife, state corrections officer Pat Baker, succumbed to lung cancer two years ago. Months before she died, Baker, relying on an oxygen tank, angrily told lawmakers it was unfair that Tevyaw wasn't considered her wife in Rhode Island despite their marriage in Massachusetts....

They were banking on Illinois becoming the 10th state to legalize gay marriage back in January, gloating how it was a done deal, then it "stalled" (translation: they can't even get lifelong RATs in safe RAT districts to drink the kool-aid, and can't muster 51% of the legislature despite having a veto proof majority in both houses), so now little marxist dying Rhode Island beat them to it. I guess Illinois just isn't "progressive" enough to make it into the top 10. Poor commies.

In Rhode Island, just 28 percent of residents approve of the job performance of Mr. Chafee
The citizens are being blinded by the civil rights sanctimony. They think it is a civil rights issue under a misguided notion of equal protection. A marriage and a homosexual relationship are two different types of relationships and to treat them as equal is a misuse of civil rights law.

Chafee will probably lose to a Republican in a three-way race. He only barely beat one in 2010 (the Dem, who rebuked Zero, came in 3rd).

I'm thrilled to discover Rhode Island allows cousin marriage but they still limit the # to just 1 cousin. You're telling me I have to choose 1 cousin and break the other cousin's hearts? I could marry 1 male cousin if I wanted to but not 6 female cousins? How is this remotely fair? This is unacceptable Lincoln. I guess I won't be founding Shelbyville in little Rhody.
I didn't know Linc was so unpopular! He's less popular than Ed DiPrete who suffered what bust be the biggest beatdown of an incumbent Governor in recent memory if not ever?
We need to make sure he doesn't quit, we'll need him to take votes from the democrat so a Republican can win.
I considered Chafee so execrable that I endorsed Congressman Bob Weygand, a liberal (but pro-life) Democrat against him in 2000. Weygand was better than Whitehouse, who beat Chafee 6 years later. I didn’t endorse Whitehouse against Chafee in ‘06, but just simply didn’t care who won, since both were equally distasteful.
One of the GOP names mentioned to run against Chafee is Allan Fung, an Asian Mayor of Cranston. No doubt the Dems would be horrified to see the GOP have another Asian Governor (following Jindal & Haley).

Yup. To Democrats and their media wing, the only “acceptable” Republican is an older, rich White male (”the Willard or McCain”). Anything out of that stereotype is reviled to the nth degree.

Aren't we lucky that "forward thinking" adults know gay marriage is "inevitable" because of the views of teeny boppers who think Justin Bieber is the great singer EVERRRRR? It's another thing the media doesn't want to talk about (for obvious reasons) but the polls show the Missing Linc is likely the LEAST popular Governor in all 50 states, and certainly the least popular incumbent up for re-election in 2014. Strangely enough, the "experts" in the liberal media still think he's "favored" to win re-election anyway. My guess is because they can't stand the thought of their favorite non-Democrat "progressive" Governor getting his butt kicked again
The Missing Linc knows he's in trouble though, and has been floating the idea of switching parties and running as a RAT precisely because of the scenario you just brought up with him splitting the liberal vote. Unfortunately for Linc, they've done polls on that too ("if the candidates were Lincoln Chafee, Democrat...") and it's unlikely to help him much. The polls show he'd probably end up like Arlen Specter did and lose the RAT primary to a longtime RAT official. Also, R.I. is full of independents who say they will vote against him regardless of what party label he runs on.
Despite what the media says, I think there's a good shot he's gone in 2014, but can R.I. Republicans take advantage of it and run at least a fairly decent right-of-center loyal Republican to replace him? I'd hope so but I'm not betting on it.

I’m not sure. Though if you do a search, it does seem apparent he wants to run for Governor next year. He’s about the most prominent GOP Mayor in the state.
I remember when Steve Laffey primaried Chafee in the 2006 U.S. Senate primary. Disgustingly, the entire GOP establishment, and even some freepers, were supporting Chafee because they said Laffey was "too conservative" for R.I. The NRSC even took the unprecedented step of using GOP donor $$$ to ATTACK a Republican Senate candidate in the primary, namely Laffey. The ironic thing is the freepers and the GOP establishment in the tank for Chafee also attacked Laffey from the right and pointed out he did took such-and-such wrong position on a handful of issues.
In reality, it was simply a matchup between the 60-70% conservative Laffey and the 20-30% conservative Chafee (and Chafee has since moved even further left!)
Looking back in hidesight, 2006 was a terrible year for the GOP and we got rid of that turd Chafee in the Senate anyway since Mr. Electable lost the general election to an official RAT. It's also likely Laffey would have lost to the national anti-GOP sentiment that year and OF COURSE the RINOs would have blamed him it on him being "too conservative", even if a single conservative statement never came out of his mouth in the general election. Still, I'm glad he ran and exposed what a fraud the so-called "moderate" Chafee is.
I wonder what happened to Laffey? I kind of wish he'd run for something else. Toomey made a comeback, although he went on to disappoint us.
Laffey left Rhode Island entirely and moved out to Fort Collins, Colorado to become a rancher. Given the current situation in his new state, perhaps he could be persuaded to dip his toes in the political pool.

Bob Smith’s run in FL was never regarded as anything other than a joke. As for the joke who was the beneficiary of voter fraud in FL, even with Col. West not seeking a rematch, he’s likely to face a serious challenger, probably from the legislature (and it won’t be Schlesinger).

Yeah, Smith was polling around 1%, probably why he dropped out. Don't remember which election cycle it was. Still not as pathetic as Buddy Roemer's "campaign" for President though. At least Smith attempted to run a real campaign before getting nowhere.

Heh. Schlesinger is a fairly squishy moderate Republican and probably too tainted with his gambling scandals to win even if he had been a well funded, NRSC backed GOP Senate candidate in a two way race against a RAT. That being said, at least he's an actual Republican and would have caucused with our guys. The only thing voting LIEberman accomplished was helping Obama destroy America. There should be some type of karma law requiring the useful idiot conservatives who donated to LIEberman to fund this guy's bid in Florida as penance.

Northern Virgina seems to attract a lot "elder statemen" retired pols, probably because they can still hang out inside the beltway. Santorum living in northern Virgina instead of Pennsylvania contributed to his re-election loss. Newt Gingrich fans were outraged anyone would refer to him a Georgia Baptist, why everyone KNOWS he's a good Virginia Catholic now! (At least until he finds wife #4)

There was one in the late 1800s who managed to serve as Senator from THREE states... James Shields. He was Senator from Illinois, Minnesota, AND Missouri. (the anti-17th amendment crowd is no doubt pleased that buttering up state legislatures allowed out of work Senators to pick out a new state to "represent" in the Senate) Illinois must really like him, he's one of two figures "from Illinois" in Statuary Hall for some inexplicable reason.
