Hearings on how to divide $7.7 million among 40 families affected by the killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown have been postponed after questions were raised about whether more money should go those families.
The hearings were scheduled for this week. A three-person committee headed by former federal judge Alan Nevas was formed to distribute the money, which comes from an approximately $11.3 million fund under the control of the Sandy Hook-Newtown Community Foundation Inc.
The group had determined that the money would be distributed among the families of the 20 first-graders and six women killed in the Dec. 14 shooting, the 12 first-graders who survived the shooting, and two teachers who were wounded.
The hearings were postponed after representatives of state Attorney General George Jepsen's office met with some of the families late last week and the decision was made to convene a meeting between the attorney general's office and the foundation.

Beyond medical expenses, what is the need for money?
Let me be insensitive here. Why does anyone deserve money just because a family member is killed in a criminal act? I don’t understand the rational. Why were all the families of 911 compensated? Is it nothing more than a feel good measure?
The entire amount should be spent in an effort to ban gun ownership of private citizens,,,,,”sarc”

Beyond funeral costs, medical expenses (including counselling) and perhaps some real nice personal protection, I’m not sure how the money will be used.
I guess if it were me, I’d use the money to move away to a place where these dangerous unsecured ‘gun-free’ zones are less common.
Then why would anyone have a problem with it - other than it's tacky to profit from a dead child. But what the heck, the morons who got a free ride on air farce one to stand behind the turd in the whitehouse to support gun control already got a free vacation out of it, and that was our expense.

A week or so ago, a mother of 5, from the *hood* in Hartford, wrote a letter to the editor of the HC; she said minority kids are dying every day in the cities...and no one is setting up funds for those families. She had a point.....white on white crime v black on black crime is the same.
Yes, it will. There’s still a sizable amount left...I’m sure there will be arguing and questions of propriety.
I contributed money to a 911 fund with the expectation that it would be spent on meeting the emergency medical, housing and food needs of those injured in the attack. It turned out there were no survivors, except rescue workers. I expected the fund to be used for them and the remainder, which was substantial, to be used for future emergencies anywhere in the country. I was disappointed to see it turned by social pressure (O’Reilly in particular) into a big life insurance fund compensating families based on things other than emergency needs.
Since then I don’t contribute money that might be misused in that earmarked way. Instead I contribute to the general fund of two charities I trust: Red Cross and Salvation Army.
I’m sorry for people who sent money for Newtown. Most of their money will go to whoever can figure a way to grab it.

People who contribute have their hearts in the right place, but as you mention, often these things turn into a *Haiti* relief fund, and the money doesn’t always go to where it is needed.
The money is from private funds, but what I don’t like is the mentality that victims of violent crime can be made to feel better with money.
It’s already becoming an entitlement, with demands for more and more money to more and more victims.
The surviving children probably need it more for therapy than those who died.
Some parental therapy may also be needed, but dividing money to people who lost their kids doesn’t seem like a good idea to me. Other than funeral expenses why should they receive money?
The state trying to figure out how to get some or all of that money?
I believe the funerals, funeral plots and skills of morticians were all pro bono.
