The very short book of Joel is most instructive as to what God said. Now this book is made part of the so called new testament by Peter in Acts 2:17. I will not tell you what to think as it is easily read and understood about what God said He was going to do IF.
And I know, understand and believe where you are coming from, globally.
My disagreement is with those who claim that the USA (which is the most conservative nation in the western world and the most Christian nation in the world) is being bombed by God because of who we are and what we do while the Islamic nation of UAE gets rich and never suffers natural disasters along with Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Uruguay...etc go untouched, almost as if they were blessed by God himself. That's the part I do not agree with.
I am uncertain why asking for G*d forgiveness and mercy is so bad. I have done so numerous times. Thank you G*d for the blessings you has bestowed on me.

And all these peoples you mention are God's children as well... and just like He told Gideon in Judges 7 to cull down the size of Gideon's army so the people did not claim the victory for themselves.
This nation use to allow God in the public square, not so these days. All manner of gods are included in the public square just as it was Written would come to pass. We the people in majority have turned our backs on the Creator, and so this nation is going to have to deal with the consequences.
Government by law requires US to keep middle east oil flowing through our engines of economy... This is not the first tine in the course of human history wherein God used/allowed the negative to be the hand of correction of those that claim to follow Him.

If you want to see how God judges a people--nation etc.--read the Old Testament.
The more those in control drag the USA away from God, the more he will judge this nation in a negative manner.
Back when Clinton was elected President, my pastor mentioned how horrible that was.
I pointed out to him that because of the way politicians and other miscreants are working to move America away from God, that that is a sign that He is judging the nation.

We disagree on how God judges nations though. He pulls his protection a distance away when a nation pulls their obeying of His guidance away.
I remember a shirt a few years ago that had on the back, God why did you allow the killings at Columbine school? On the shirt, God's answer was you didn't want Me in your schools.
I understand where you're coming from there. "allow" to me is a bit strong because we have some shallow minded people in this country who confuse "allow" with "supporting".
I remember being in a conversation with a homeless teen at the library and I told him I didn't think I would try to sell the Santa Claus thing to my kids because when they get older and find out the man in the red suit was not real they may also conclude the same about Jesus Christ. The teen looked at me and asked "You mean Jesus is real?"

I agree with that. I just don't consider it to be God's judgement. I think God's judgement is something someone like Osama Bin Laden experienced once his time on Earth ended. To me that's judgement.
