Britain evacuates some diplomatic staff from Libya (Tripoli this time)

Unrest on the streets of Libya's capital, Tripoli, has forced Britain to evacuate some diplomats from its embassy, the Foreign Office disclosed on Friday.

Armed militiamen have effectively shut down the Libyan foreign and justice ministries, protesting against what they say is the continued employment of officials from the old regime.

Rebels acting in concert with British and French air power toppled Col Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Libya now has a freely elected government, but any hopes of a swift return to stability have been dashed. Libya remains a lawless country, threatened by armed militias left over from the civil war.

Western targets have often been singled out for attack: a bomb exploded outside the French embassy in Tripoli last month, wounding two guards, and a mob stormed the US consulate in Benghazi last September, killing the ambassador, Chris Stevens, and three other Americans. Last June, a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at a convoy in Benghazi carrying Sir Dominic Asquith, then Britain's ambassador in Libya.
