Alabama AG Ask Targeted Tea Party Groups in AL to Contact Office, Calls for Special Prosecutor

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange wants to know if any nonprofit groups in the state may have been targeted by the Internal Revenue Service.

Strange invited any 501c4 organizations who believe they may have been unjustly scrutinized by the IRS to contact his office at 334-242-7300.

Leaders of two Alabama tea party groups told AL.com this week that they were singled out by the IRS over their applications for tax-exempt status.

The IRS has apologized for what it called “inappropriate” reviews of conservative political groups.

"Americans don’t expect to be singled out and punished for their political beliefs, and for any government agency to do so threatens the most basic foundations of our republic," Strange said. "Despite the waffling from the White House, it appears the IRS sought to systematically harass American organizations seeking to exercise their free speech and association rights."

Strange, a Republican, called on President Barack Obama to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the IRS' activities. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said today that he had ordered a criminal investigation into allegations that top IRS officials targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny.

"This situation demands full accountability from the IRS and procedures to ensure that safeguards are put in place so that this type of egregious abuse of the public trust does not occur again," Strange said.

"It only makes sense for the President to appoint a special prosecutor to fairly and impartially investigate these troubling allegations to determine who directed these activities and if anyone in or associated with the White House knew of these activities and failed to stop them."

Oh good... get some state AG’s involved.

States can bring resources to bear that would be difficult or impossible for individuals to access.

I’m encouraged by the number of states “taking back” their rights, and I hope the trend continues!

Would Albama be able to prosecute Federal employees for violating the civil rights of their citizens?

Excellent, but how far is the Alabama AG going to take this? Will he file suit in federal court over it? If so, it’s time to get the AGs of lots of other states to join him in this effort.

Might be tough, but if more AG’s join you don’t know what might happen. I found it encouraging as I did Jindal and Walker doing the same today.

If I can’t move to Texas, I’d seriously consider Alabama as an alternative.

Several states AG need to bring their weight of their state to take the IRS to task....even if it doesn’t bring any convictions of civil rights violations ... It sure will keep the IRS from every again being used as a political tool...

Bury them in paperwork and subpoenas....make them rue the day....the WH pressed them into their service...

Kinda wonder what Jim Trafficant has to say about this. The IRS was a favorite target of his.

Holders FBI “investigating” the IRS scandal is like OJ “investigating” the murder of Nicole.

Obama, Jarett, Axelrod, Biden and Holder were up to their neck in the IRS doing what they did and if anyone believes to the contrare I’ve got a bridge to sell.

Now, granted, we are not going to “discover” any emails or notes on napkins or recordings because such deals are made on long walks in the woods between TWO people. But, this iRS scandal went all the way to the top!!

Yeah, how much in federal taxes did those Tea Party groups have to pay, because they were being denied proper tax exempt status by the IRS?

We want reparations! No justice - no peace!!
