Acting IRS commissioner resigns in wake of agency scandal

President Obama announced Wednesday that acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller has resigned in the wake of the agency scandal in which conservative groups were targeted.

The president made the announcement in a brief statement at the White House, following a meeting with Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew  and other top department officials in which they reviewed a highly critical inspector general’s report on the practice. The report concluded poor management allowed agents to improperly target Tea Party and other groups for more than 18 months, starting in 2010.

Obama said Lew asked for the resignation and Miller agreed, after being on the job since November 2012.

“Americans have a right to be angry about it, and I’m angry about it,” Obama said from the White House.

Republicans, who along with Democrats have slammed the IRS for the practice, welcomed the resignation Wednesday but made clear they would continue to investigate and press for accountability.

Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., said the resignation "is a necessary first step but more heads need to roll."

Miller’s resignation was part of three-step plan Obama outlined to fix the problem.

The other steps are to put in place the safeguards recommended in the IG report and to work with Congress as it investigates.

“The good news is we can fix this,” Obama said.

Miller became acting commissioner after Commissioner Douglas Shulman completed his five-year term. Shulman had been appointed by President George W. Bush.

The president has proceeded cautiously since the IRS controversy was made public Friday. While he initially said the accusations were "outrageous," he also said he wanted to wait until the report was released before addressing what should be done to hold accountable those responsible.

Yes, indeed. One only needs to wonder who would benefit most from these illicit actions, to risk prison to commit.

We need a new day Sirica to ferret this to the source. I’ve seen this movie.

Obamacare, enforced by the corrupt IRS. What could possibly go wrong?

Not enough. I want to know if anyone told the IRS to audit conservatives, Christians, jews and the Tea Parties. Who is behind it?
Firing does not answer any questions and according to Judge Napolitano the IRS agents cannot be prosecuted by congress..only fired

“The good news is we can fix this,” Obama said.

Awright Barry, let's redo the 2012 election then.

Several democrat Congressmen including Al Franken had sent the IRS threatening emails demanding that the IRS do exactly what it has done to conservative groups such as the Tea Party.

Anybody got that list of names?

I guess this resignation is a sham. The “acting” commissioner’s tenure was due to expire 6/1/13.

"Mark Levin says this guy was scheduled to leave in early June." Needed repeating....

Indeed, since most comments seem more focused on cracking the best one-liner, than actually investigating this.

Additionally, Levin presented information that his own legal organization, Landmark, was involved in lawsuits against the IRS during the 90's that the IRS targeted conservative groups during the Clinton administration. So whenever people from Congress or on TV mention this issue, they should be stating that this is now happening AGAIN.

Levin then correctly recommends that persons of prominence in the Republican party begin suggesting the IRS be completely terminated, because of a pattern of unfairness, and be replaced by a flat tax OR a fair tax.

Of course, he's right on, but once again no one will probably do anything, too busy trying to make themselves look good by finding the cleverest way to repeat the obvious, than work towards any actual change.

Here’s one job he had at the IRS before his ascent: Commissioner of the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division. Hmmm...interesting, no? He had a lotta personal connections at that place.

The first body has been thrown under the bus.

What about people like Holder and Obama. ORDERS always come from HEADQUARTERS.

Then he says in an e-mail he won’t be leaving til June when his mission there is over.

So this is nothing..not a resignation nor a fire...he was leaving anyway.

Yep...I read that as well earlier...so this is nothing at all...nobodies down folks..yet!

Can't believe Zero would think we'd by this farce....I suppose since he thinks the general public are idiots he can say anything and they'll swallow it.

But the press MSNBC etc. have been screaming he has to DO something to quiet the storm.

This isn't it.

DC is infested with RAT vermin; call Orkin.

It needs an exorcism, too.

Can you imagine how filthy the White House must be right now?
