In a groundbreaking resolution, the Los Angeles Unified District school board voted Tuesday to ban suspensions for willful defiance, making it the first district in the state to do so.
This decision will stop suspensions for a variety of misbehaviorsanything from mouthing off to teachers, eating food in the classroom, or violating the school dress codewhich critics have maintained are too broad and arbitrarily enforced. Instead, starting next year, principals will install alternative disciplinary measures while students remain in school.
The ban in LAUSD, the second largest school district in the country, marks a major shift from a zero-tolerance policy for minor infractions.
We know that taking kids out of school is not an effective solution for dealing with students who have behavioral issues, said Tonna Onyendu, an organizer with the Liberty Hill Foundation, a nonprofit group that helped craft the proposal for LAUSD. Whats worse, he said, is it leads to racial profiling in the classroom.
Data collected by the U.S. Department of Education from schools around the nation shows that the zero-tolerance approach to school discipline has a discriminatory effect. African-American students are suspended from school more than three times as often as white students across all grade levels.
In LAUSD, African-American children make up nine percent of the student body, but they account for 26 percent of all suspensions, nearly half of which are for willful defiance offenses.
Seattle and New York City school districts faced civil rights investigations by the U.S. Department of Education for an alarming rise in suspension rates in recent years, particularly among African-American and Latino boys.

The only purpose of education in Western Civilization—since Socrates was to teach Virtue.
All the Founders stated the same thing. (Virtue is excellence, Wisdom —Christian Ethics —the Bible and Classics were in the McGuffey Readers to instill Wisdom. Wisdom is defined by Socrates as being able to discern between Good and Evil).
That ended with John Dewey-—the father of modern education who was a Fabian Socialist. His curricula blurs good and evil (throws out Classics and Bible) and literally destroys Knowledge—the understanding of history. It is intentional—the dumbing down of America—is written about since the 40’s.
He wanted to fundamentally change the worldview of our children from a Christian ethic to an atheist/pagan/occult one where totalitarianism could exist. He succeeded to a large extent. We need the government out of education.....JS Mill stated government schools would only make slaves (idiots) for the State.
just making policy that fits current facts
You nailed it — bodies in the seat = money in the administrators’ pockets.
None. Now, the ones *not* in their right mind? Either they or the students will need to watch out because something's gotta give.
We know that taking kids out of school is not an effective solution for dealing with students who have behavioral issues,
What a bunch of morons. Suspension and expulsion are to protect the students who aren’t discipline problems from the ones that are, and leave the teachers to teach without disruption. Leaving disruptive students in the school should not even be an option.
“Seriously? What teacher in their right mind would continue to work there?”
You’ll be surprised. I sit on a “group” which consults the LA Unified Idiots, I mean District, and the a large group of the teachers are either quitters or couldn’t care less. The after school programs involves Facebook and TMZ, I kid you not.
BULLYING as defined by the Left meaning picking on/teasing queers. Fat kids, nerds, brains, and conservatives are still ripe for harassment in schools.
And when kids "mouth off" to their teachers, they are "questioning authority" which is a higher calling of liberalism.
Another example of why multiculturalism and diversity do not work.
Also Christians and anybody who expresses a conservative political viewpoint.
