Free market. If you give them cash they're going to get crack anyway. While I don't actually approve of them paying with crack, would anyone here really disapprove if they bought them a meal in return for labor.

No, they did not get away with it.
Federal investigators say the evidence was better in the counterfeit check case, so they’re not going to charge the owner with drug charges.
The federal counterfeit charges carry a stiffer penalty.

Seems like it would be counter-productive.
I remember character Nino Brown (Snipes) did the same with his crack manufacturing plant in movie New Jack City.(I love that movie)
He hired addicts and paid them in rocks of crack, but they had to be watched very closely obviously.
