You consider yourself a law abiding citizen, and you are not starting a nonprofit organization with conservative ties.
Even so, you may be a candidate for a tax auditand you may have no clue what you have done to warrant the attention of the IRS.
The nation's tax collectors have long made it a practice to look for discrepancies, omissions and suspicious activity to uncover tax evasion and fraud. And lately, the IRS has expanded its monitoring to include social media.
The agency now keeps an eye out for online discussions about nonpayment or underpayment of taxes, and even sale prices of goods on sites like eBay that don't match what taxpayers report.
In a world where companies like Amazon can keep tabs on consumers' online activities, the shift by the IRS is reasonable, says Edward Zelinsky, a law professor at Cardozo Law School. "This was always known to people in the tax community that the IRS, like everybody else in the 21st century, was monitoring online."
But Zelinsky is just one expert concerned about the lack of transparency around the IRS' practices. The agency "is so secretive about what is going on that that really erodes public confidence," he said.
The American Civil Liberties Union has also expressed qualms about IRS secrecy. That group filed a Freedom of Information Act request for documents explaining whether the IRS always obtains search warrants to read email and other electronic communications. "Unfortunately, while the documents we have obtained do not answer this question point blank, they suggest otherwise," wrote Nathan Freed Wessler, a staff attorney at the ACLU.
So how can you know if you are under scrutiny? You can't know exactly, but some moves are more likely than others to attract attention.....

Maybe Maxwell was right:
I don’t know anymore
Are the neighbors watching me
Well is the mailman watching me
And I don’t feel safe anymore, oh what a mess
I wonder who’s watching me now-— (BOO!) -The IRS?
Was thinking the very same thing.
Ten to one, this bunch of politically correct thugs monitors Facebook... and Facebook probably gave them the software to do it.
This article would probably be useful if the IRS was not a political arm of the Democratic party.
Now, the simple answer to this question is, “Are you a conservative?”
I usually got a letter see ya thursday!
Obamas IRS delayed approval of conservative groups until AFTER the 2012 election. So the IRS rigged the election for Obama. all these tea party groups if allowed to participate also would have gotten more conservative Republicans elected to the House and Senate. So Obamas IRS rigged the election stole the presidency, stole the Senate for democrats/socialists and made the House more liberal. This is illegal and unconstitutional. email this to congressmen so they are aware of that the IRS and Obamas plan was to steal the election by shutting down the tea party.

They got me this year. A typo on my home business deductions threw it out of line from the previous years—not the expense mind you...the square footage I claimed for the office.
The process started in May 2011 for the 2010 return. They are just getting to it now. Wanna bet any penalties go back to 2010?
Nice enough guy....but no sense of humor at all.

Absolute, 100% certain. And FR too.
My brother, OTOH, was very aggressive about taking every deduction to which he was entitled. He got audited multiple times even though I don't recall that he ever ended up paying them any extra taxes. It was like they were on a vendetta against him.
I think my Dad had the right idea by holding just a few deductions in reserve, even though it meant overpaying them over his lifetime. The time loss and aggravation from just one audit is a loss of more than $50, even for what it could buy back in the 1970s.
LOL I had 4 kids all had what was called a piggly acount 25 bucks each! When I got my attachment they took the wiggly money as well as all in other accounts!
Not a deal but I thought it was the kids money as it was all gifts they had recieved! But My ssn was attached!
You want to be safe from the thugs that infest every branch and agency of the government? Get rid of your email accounts, send large contributions to Obama, tell everyone you know that you’ve had an awakening and show off your little red book, stay off the Internet except Facebook where you post photos of Lenin and Mao while friending Hilary and finally, never, never, ever post to Free Republic.
I don’t remember exactly when during the Clinton years, but as a lurker here I had a federal “officer of the law” respond to one of my posts here about medical cannabis in Washington State. It was freaking spooky. The poster started sending me private replies here, personal email account and mailed me a letter!
Nothing ever came of it but it made me carry 24/7!
Another time, a CNS reporter tracked me from here to my private email wanting some background information concerning some rates of state taxation I posted to a thread on tobacco subculture. Funny too, I’ve never been a smoker, I just sympathize with their plight!
Bottom line, you have no privacy if you choose to use the internet in any shape form or fashion unless you use counter measures and how many folks take those precautions?
He sternly told me "Nobody ever went broke paying taxes".
I resigned and walked out 30 minutes later.
The headline is “How to Tell If the IRS Is Eyeing You”
then it says “ You can’t know exactly,”
Bait and switch journalism.
