Bedouin tribes in Egypts Sinai Peninsula implied on Thursday that they were better off living under Israeli rule and that they have been suffering since Israel withdrew from the region as part of the peace agreement with Egypt.
The residents of the Sinai spoke to the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram, after local tribesmen kidnapped seven Egyptian security personnel near the city of El-Arish.
The seven were kidnapped by an unknown group in north Sinai while en route to Cairo. Local residents said the kidnapping was "retaliation" by Bedouin tribesmen for heavy-handed security policies adopted by the Egyptian interior ministry.
Mohamed El-Asati, who hails from Sinai's Aleiqat tribe, told Al-Ahram that the Bedouin have already paid a heavy price for the return of the land in the October 1973 War."
He added that the interior ministry wants to return to its old ways, but this is unacceptable after the revolution.
Al-Ahram reported that many Sinai residents seek to revenge themselves on security forces after years of heavy-handed security policies under Mubarak-era interior minister Habib El-Adly, who many accuse of failing to respect human rights and tribal traditions.
"We also paid a heavy price in terms of our security and dignity in the Mubarak era, said El-Asati. And after the revolution, we will not allow the interior ministry's old brutal policies to return during the era of Muslim Brotherhood rule.

Gee, I'm all twisted out of shape over that. How sad. Tsk tsk.
The sand is yellower on the other side of the fence.
Good thing no one asked them in 1974. Thanks Eleutheria5.
Better off? Sure, but they still hate Jews.
Heck if they’re Bedouins why don’t they just keep moving around until the find a place they like? Are Bedouins building gated communities with home owners associations these days? Move on ye noble nomads!
....other than that, what have the Israelis ever done for us?
Rabbi Dov Lior, head rabbinical authority in Kiryat Arba, has advocated air-lifting the Bedouins to Libya, where they can frolic in the dessert to their hearts’ content. This would actually be a kindness.
I totally agree with Rabbi Dov Lior, head rabbinical authority in Kiryat Arba. And we have never met.
Sure easy to figure who has never been anywhere near a Bedouin in their cloistered little lives..
They are a good, solid bunch of people. They are friendly to visitors, honest (as long as a bit of smuggling isn’t too important), good to their families, ferocious against anybody dumb enough to be their enemies. They are the one segment of Arabs who have worked well with the Israelis and as this article alludes, tends to prefer them over the Egyptians.
Heaven protect us from the “experts” out there who have never left their little bergs to go look at the rest of the world.
Would it were that simple. I am well aware of their several virtues. But they are overpopulated and urbanized right now, with no place to dump their garbage, and as a consequence Bedouin villages tend to smell badly and are leaking toxins from gigantic piles of disposable diapers into the ground water. The idyllic noble savages of the dessert now not only smuggle, but also smuggle weapons to Hamas in Ghaza, as well as narcotics into Israel. They’ve also staged a hostile takeover of huge chunks of the Negev, and are stealing livestock and terrorizing ranchers in the Galil and the Negev. We have enough of them. What ever their contributions to the IDF’s man-power, the benefit is outweighed by the foregoing. They would be happier and healthier in the Sahara, where they might once again revert to the virtuous aboriginals of yore. It would be a kindness to ship them all to Libya.
