Just a Crook? Pentagon Papers Lawyer Thinks Obama Is Worse Than Nixon
The New York Observer ^ | May 14, 2013 | Michael H. Miller

Posted on 05/18/2013 3:16:15 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

James C. Goodale, the so-called “father of reporters’ privilege” and the author of a new book called Fighting for the Press (CUNY Journalism Press, 255 pp., $20), was in his office at the Debevoise & Plimpton law firm, where he’s a partner, comparing Barack Obama to Richard M. Nixon.

“Nixon and Agnew were like listening to a Fox News program all day long, every day,” he said. “In their eyes, the Eastern establishment press were against them and they were against it and they were going to destroy it as best they can.” But, he said, “Obama has all these things that he’s done to the press on national security matters that Nixon never did.”

Mr. Goodale, 79, was the general counsel of The New York Times during the 1971 Pentagon Papers case, when President Nixon ordered the old grey lady to cease publication of excerpts from a 7,000-page document, which detailed America’s involvement in Vietnam over the course of three decades. The Times published the first excerpt on June 13, 1971. By June 26, the case had reached the Supreme Court. Over the course of a few days, the justices ruled in a 6-3 decision that the U.S. government could not censor the Times. Nixon then convened a grand jury to indict the Times for conspiracy to violate the Espionage Act—”which really doesn’t mean anything,” Mr. Goodale said, rubbing his forehead in distress—but the case quickly fell apart. Fighting for the Press reads like a political thriller, with Nixon providing some dark comic relief. The guy was not exactly subtle: “As far as the Times is concerned,” he said to John Mitchell, the U.S. Attorney General, “hell they’re our enemies.”

Now, the man who successfully fought Nixon says President Obama has an even more troubling record.....

This would be front page on the NYT and WP, and there’d be a rush-rush “60 Minutes” segment on the story. That is, if the current occupant of the White House wasn’t the darling of the MSM.

“Nixon and Agnew were like listening to a Fox News program all day long, every day,” he said. “In their eyes, the Eastern establishment press were against them and they were against it and they were going to destroy it as best they can.”

So the Nixon administration was mistaken? The Eastern establishment press were NOT against them?

If nothing else - and of course, there’s a LOT else - this business with the EPA and the IRS demonstrate clear violations of the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection clauses. I’m pretty sure that if anybody digs into other agencies, we’ll see that this pattern is repeated at every other agency that performs any kind of regulatory or enforcement function (Justice Dept. for sure).

Of course this is impeachable. And of course it won’t be pursued because the GOP has become part of the problem.

“In their eyes, the Eastern establishment press were against them and they were against it and they were going to destroy it as best they can.”

Nixon was one of the first to recognize the red menace slowly reaching it's tentacles into government, news media, education, unions, and Hollywood. Unfortunately he was outnumbered, he was portrayed as paranoid and destroyed. I think at this point it is time for history to revisit his presidency given what we now know about the Marxists in this country.

The GOP is not doing its job.

Allowing BO and his people, H! and everybody, to do what they’re doing is not the fault of the no thinking electorate, the MSM, nor Romney himself. They all contribute. The fault is that of the GOP.

They’re not up to it. Too much golf, cocktail parties, entitled-to-a political position, blackmailability, lack of patriotism.

They’ve deflected responsibility away from themselves as expertly as BO and H!

But it’s their job to go after the truth, regardless of the outcome.

And they haven’t done it. Not only that, they obstruct those who try.

In 1968, the “New Democrats” on the Left did not have control of the DNC or fully of the media or academia.

The Chicago riots were from New Left Democrats (inside and outside the convention), inside the media as well.

Now the 1968 “revolutionaries” (communist sympathizers all) hold high positions in academia, media, and the Democrat Party.

The unAmerican activities of those on the Left are coming to fruition. The “Communist goals” that were once ridiculed are commonly observed. Alinsky’s name is proudly cited by those on the Left and a mere “conspiracy theory” when brought up from the Right.

They didn't have full control, but the movement was there. I was a college student at the time and the professors told us that it was important for a university to welcome and examine all philosophies even those that seemed to be un-American. It was then politically incorrect and closed minded to not give everyone a fair hearing.
Now conservative ideas are ridiculed. Much has changed.

So, this guy thinks Odumbo is worse than Nixon? Someone needs to tell him to avoid Ft Marcy Park. We don’t want any “accidents” to happen.

I have read that a homosexual claiming to work inside the NYT posted on a homosexual blog in a manner of boasting with a snicker that 75% of NYT writers and editors are homosexual.

And I believe it.

The writer of the piece here wants in effect to repeat with variation that Republicans are in effect conducting a witch hunt.
