Skip to comments.CNN Poll: Have new controversies hurt Obama? Has GOP overreacted?

Washington (CNN) President Barack Obama comes out of what was arguably the worst week of his presidency with his approval rating holding steady, according to a new national poll.
But a CNN/ORC International survey released Sunday morning also indicates that congressional Republicans are not overplaying their hand when it comes to their reaction to the three controversies that have consumed the nation's capital over the past week and a half. And the poll finds that a majority of Americans take all three issues seriously.
According to the survey, which was conducted Friday and Saturday, 53% of Americans say they approve of the job the president is doing, with 45% saying they disapprove. The president's approval rating was at 51% in CNN's last poll, which was conducted in early April.
"That two-point difference is well within the poll's sampling error, so it is a mistake to characterize it as a gain for the president," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "Nonetheless, an approval rating that has not dropped and remains over 50% will probably be taken as good news by Democrats after the events of the last week."
The CNN poll is in-line with Gallup, which also indicated a very slight rise in Obama's approval rating over the same time period. And Gallup's daily tracking poll also indicated a slight upward movement of Obama's approval rating over the past week. But as with the CNN poll, it was within that survey's sampling error.

I find it disheartening that he can still be over 50% with the disaster that is going on.
There is some good stuff in the poll results that a majority disagree with the IRS, aren't satisfied with how Benghazi was handled, believe the Benghazi attack could have been prevented, disagree with the phone tapping, and don't believe the Republicans have overplayed their hands.
That said, I find some disheartening answers that show people still believe Obama is innocent in all this. I find it disheartening that:
~But more than six in 10 say that the president's statements about the IRS scandal are completely or mostly true, with 35% not agreeing with Obama's characterizations. And 55% say that IRS acted on its own, with 37% saying that White House ordered the IRS to target tea party and other conservative groups.
~According to the poll, 44% say statements made by the Obama administration soon after the attack were an attempt to intentionally mislead the public.
That means the majority think that Obama thought he was telling the truth. Susan Rice was just going on what they thought they knew.
If anyone listens to Rush Limbaugh, this stuff validates the Limbaugh Theorem.
Because the media have not asked the right questions.... this question would blow this all open...
Mr. President you have called the Bengahzi controversy a sideshow and political attack..... Wouldn’t you agree that an Independent Special Prosecutor should be called on to investigate the IRS and AP scandals to avoid any political impropriety?
Follow up: In all these controversy’s it appears that Politics was the initial catalyst yet you continue to accuse the right of playing politics, is anyone that disagrees with your agenda or your handling of situations playing Politics?
His head would explode...
The first question the pollster asks is, “What results are you looking for?” Then, the questions are created to verify the expected results.
seriously CNN? Why should it matter politically? What should matter to CNN is doing the right thing and continue to pursue what is clearly an example of OBama’s abuse of power
Seriously, how in the h##l can that Marxist SOB continue to have these #s? Are people that damn stupid?
The pollsters must have just called obamaPhones.
The GOP has not overreacted - what a question.
The press, however, has indeed underreacted by only giving tepid attention to it. If this was Bush the approval would have dropped 20+ points by now due to wall to wall coverage of each scandal.
Damn the polls, full speed ahead.
They make me sick. Has all this crap hurt NORMAL PEOPLE? Who the hell cares if it has hurt the imposter’s image!?
These are typical marxists.
In Washington there are quite a few Democrat heads looking over their shoulders and exclaiming breathlessly, “Did we get away with it?” That’s all this poll means.
The GOP hasn’t reacted at all, nor will it.
the cnn have never asked me
Typical Communist News Network push-polling to shift attention from the real issue (Obammie the Commie’s Stalinist tactics) to a non-issue, whether the GOP is the true ‘bad guy’ for daring to investigate the real issue.
And they can’t figure out why their popularity is sinking faster than a millstone in the ocean.
“It matters little who votes, it is who counts the votes matters”...Joseph Stalin.
Voter fraud will overcome the citizens.
“I find it disheartening that he can still be over 50% with the disaster that is going on.”
This is the New & Improved U.S. of A. /sarc
Garbage in, garbage out.
Right, the Communist News Network : don’t believe a word or digit.
62% of Demonrats said UNACCEPTABLE...
This is all a function of the media and its failure to do its job.
They are a disgrace.
I wonder to Commies like CNN, what would Obama have to do to really piss them off..what would get them outraged..murder..that’s already been done..trampling on the Constitution, that’s already been done..spying on their phone calls, that’s already been done..Hey, if Obama killed one of their mamma’s would they be outraged then, or just find a way to blame a Republican for it
This poll, even though it came from the Commie News Network, probably does have some validity to it, look at the idiots who re-elected Obama, they are MORONS..as long as they get their welfare and food stamps they are happy..they could care less who Obama has killed or what he does at the IRS to target Conservatives, as long as they can get their free iPhones and Govt goodies they are super satisfied
Ok CNN, look at this way. The Democrat Party is for the little guy, remember? Yet the IRS, on behalf of the Democrat Party, CRUSHED the little guy in 2012. You like?
The taxpayers subsidized the Boston Bombers and the Cleveland kidnapper. Government subsidized murder and kidnap. What a country!
Talk about a loaded question? Who is going to answer no? nThe wagons are circling.
Pray for America to Wake Up
Absolutely, but that seems to be the presiding theme on CNN and among the liberals in the media. As opposed to focusing on the scandals, they deflect by focusing on the GOP’s reaction to them. Will the GOP overplay their hand? That’s the question they keep wondering, almost with faux concern for the GOP. They WANT the GOP to overplay their hand, and frankly, I don’t think the GOP can overplay their hand in this situation. That doesn’t mean they won’t make it look like the GOP has overplayed their hand, though. When they do that, the sheep will lap it up, and the GOP can be made the bad guys for picking on poor Obama. Poor Obama, all this happened in spite of him. He’d only knew, why, he’d have tried to stop it.
You’re absolutely right that if this was Bush, the media would be looping these scandals 24/7. Bush’s approval rating would plunge, not go up. Do you think if this was Bush, the media would be asking if the Democrats are overplaying their hand? Hell no! Of course not! The media would never ask that because they wouldn’t want to do anything to deflect to the Democrats and make the Democrats look like the bad guys, and the media would be helping them play it!
Exactly! All some people are some free goodies and they are slaves to the Govt for life..they could give a rats ass what Obama does to this country..I honestly don’t think they even care, as long as they get their free govt steaks and free iPhones they are happy
its the reason the Founding Fathers made it the 1st amendment!..the very first!....A free press is the ONLY check on a rogue government!...Checks and balances were what the Constitution was founded on!!
A lot of people are very very emotionally invested in Obama. They treat attacks on him, even ones that they except as legitimate ones, as attacks on them.
Well they’re probably asking people who don’t have a clue what they’re talking about because they don’t keep up with the news.
Fox did a segment of “man on the street” interviews...only one, out of maybe 10 folks interviewed even knew what Benghazi was. Some Cal Berkeley students didn’t know who the Vice President was.
And I’m sick of the polls, they have absolutely nothing to do with anything. So what if 90 percent think he’s doing a good job, the Congress is the one with oversight to investigate what he is and isn’t doing, what he knew and didn’t know. If they do their job, who cares what the American people think or don’t think. Poll questions are manipulated to get the answers the pollster wants.
I’m encouraged to see some congresscritters and even some nedia “newsreaders” (they usually aren’t journalists) showing some outrage (I just saw Bob Schieffer clip and a couple of the press conferences where they’re hammering Carney.)
I remember Watergate.. most people didn’t care about it either way - - at first...
Bob Schieffer did a great job with that ... he’s on the verge of calling this mess ‘Watergate’... and he was holding the lowlife’s feet to the fire.... But on a major thread here many were ‘missing that point’ of Schieffer’s interview... almost like we had a troll-fest or something. Maybe it just takes people a white to understand...
The Media lies.
But the polls about Obama paid for by the media tell the truth?
I wish one of the questions was: “What are your main sources of news”?
A better question would be “Has CNN under reacted? “
This shows you how CNN works for Obama. The respondents were clearly “what's in this for me?” skunks who don't give a damn about America as long as the free Weffaire cheese keep comin’.
Yeah, I’d like to see a poll done with questions asked, and then at the end, ask people where they obtain their news, what news station, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
