Hes compared himself to Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, evoked nostalgia for John F. Kennedy, sought to emulate Ronald Reagan, (belatedly) praised George W. Bush, and enlisted the assistance of Bill Clinton in his 2012 re-election effort, but as his second term stumbles along, the president with whom Barack Obama finds himself being compared is Richard M. Nixon.
My father, Lou Cannon, covered the White House with distinction for the Washington Post for many years, beginning in the Nixon administration. He employed an easy rule of thumb when fielding phone calls from anonymous tipsters:
If the caller said, I have a story that will make Watergate look like a picnic, Dad would hang up on him.
In the past week, Nixons name has been invoked often, and not in a way that pleases the current president or his loyalists. Unless its a reference to his dramatic 1972 visit to China, Nixon is not the president any of his successors enjoy being likened to -- especially when the suffix gate is attached to it.
Barack Obama was only 13 years old when Nixon resigned from office one step ahead of the posse. This is old enough to know that correlations between himself and the 37th president should be contested, which Obama has done.
Ill let you guys engage in those comparisons, he replied when asked at a rainy Rose Garden appearance Thursday how he felt about the Nixon parallel. You can go ahead and read the history, I think, and draw your own conclusions.

This article is offensive.
I liked Nixon. I don’t like for Obama at all.
Don’t forget his side kick J. Eric Holder.
If Nixon had a son ...
I wish everyone would stop comparing der Fuehrer to Nixon. Nixon had more respect for the Constitution and the Republic than this POS National Socialist Democrat ever could. Nixon had a sense of honor; he declined to press the issue of the rampant cheating in 1960 and the fact that he probably won then because he didn’t want to put the country through a Constitutional crisis. He resigned rather than forcing an impeachment crisis. He was flawed but he was more of an american than any democrat could ever strive to be (if any ever did).
FUBO, FAD, and down with the democrat party.
Thanks N...
Here is my point:
We don’t need a “GATE” to already have enough knowledge of what this administration is doing and fostering- Thuggery.
If they refuse to come out and tell the American people what happened in these scandals then that is all we need to know. If they had explanations then they would have already given them.
They are caught. Liars. Thugs. intimidators. We don’t need a Congressional panel to understand it. It’s already there for all to see.
It is not necessary that everything be traced right to Obama.
It’s his administration. LIARS, Thugs and Intimidators.
Including Hillary Clinton.
I’m in the same boat. I don’t like it but it is something that liberals understand. We have all the time in the world to repair Nixon’s legacy later.
If hussein were white, he’d be gone already by impeachment. Come to think of it, he never would have been elected to begin with, due to lack of any kind of experience.
I liked Nixon too. He was brilliant and had many talents.
But- Nixon also wanted socialized medicine. He took us off the gold standard, and installed wage and price controls.
Re the beginning of the article, Obama is the ONLY one who is comparing Obama to previous great Presidents. Embarrassing hubris.
When one considers what some psychological experts write about Mister Obama, the comparisons to others in history (who displayed the characteristics of the pathological narcissist), are even scarier.
And this is important because (from the above article) the pathological narcissist craves power and adulation, hates criticism, indulges in "magical thinking", and gets even with critics.
.
Good one.
Hear, hear (for Nixon).
You’re Welcome, Enjoy! :o)
Nixon also gave us the EPA.
“Nixon also gave us the EPA.”
Yep.
Thanks for letting me steal it.
