(CT)Background check backlog slows down gun permit applications

A sharp spike in the number of people seeking gun permits following recent changes in gun legislation has police departments inundated with applications.

In some cases people have been waiting months for their permits to come through, and there are many questions about whether the process is bogged down by unnecessary steps.

...

"I was told I needed to learn to be patient," said Dayna Going.

Going said she has been waiting nearly five months for her permit to be approved.

"You know, it was my right," she said. "I believe I was entitled to some sort of explanation."

The application process works like this: All applicants are fingerprinted by their local police department, and they are then sent to both Connecticut State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to check for any offenses that may disqualify them from having a pistol permit.

"There are many times we'll do 200 to 250 and we'll eliminate them from the system and another 350 applications will come I," said Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance.

The unit responsible for classifying the fingerprints is working hard, but police said it's time consuming task.

"As of today the backlog was just over 4,800 fingerprint cards," Vance said.

But some local departments said there may be a solution to the backlog. There is a machine that is an automated fingerprinting system that scans a person's fingerprint and within an hour, runs them through state and FBI criminal databases.

South Windsor Police Chief Matthew Reed said local departments have the technology and use it in criminal cases, but are still required to send inked fingerprints to the state and the FBI for manual processing.

You must be patient while the state determines if they will allow you to exercise your Constitutional rights. It may take years.

Wonder how the journalists would take it if it took months or years to exercise their constitutional rights. Words kill people. Ideas kill people. Look at Obamacare. Look at “communism”. Look at “eugenics” and “population control”.

Well babe: I live in Maryland and applying for a permit to carry from the State Police is easy, but you will never get it unless you know a powerful politician .

It is almost impossible.

Oh Yes: We won a case I court that ordered Maryland to start giving permits, but they appealed it and it is now in appeal. Probably will stay there for 100 years. Meanwhile State Police aren’t handing out any permits.

One of the commenters says that by LAW CT must approve or deny a permit in 8 weeks.

If it says that it is bad coding. It should say "if not denied within 8 weeks it is automatically approved".

There is one background check not made that could have saved many, many lives and trillions upon trillions of dollars.

They are doing it on purpose. It’s their way of limiting the number of honest, law-abiding citizens who have the legal authorization to carry.

Meanwhile, criminals are laughing as they trade drugs for illegal guns out of the trunk of a car.

In NJ its the same story. About 4 months to get a FID card. The when you go to buy a gun there is about a 2 week delay by the NJ State Police in with their “instant” NICS check. This is mostly due to the fact they stopped abswering the phone after Jan 1 and only take faxes now thereby creating their own unconstitutional unlegislated waiting period.

Another socialist success story.

5 months? Any lawyers in CT willing to take this up pro bono and make a name for themselves?

This is a clear infringement, and I am not even a lawyer.

There comes a point where you stop feeling bad for people in these liberal states.

That was my reaction.

Justice delayed, is justice denied. William Gladstone

Just wait until the National Socialists require everyone to only have a gun with ‘smart technology’ that can only fire when you get Their permission…..

Oh crap .. just gave them a very bad idea.. never mind
