(CBS) SEBASTIAN, Fla. - A Florida state attorney says the charges against Kaitlyn Hunt, an 18-year-old high school student who engaged in a same-sex relationship with a 14-year-old classmate, will not be dropped, despite petitions from the public, CBS affiliate WTSP reports.

Hunt has been expelled from Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, Fla. and is charged with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery of a child 12 to 16 years of age as a result of the relationship.

The case began in February when Hunt was arrested and charged after the younger girl's parents notified authorities, reportedly when Hunt turned 18. Since then, the story has garnered national attention for what some say is a gay rights issue.

Does this mean NAMBLA has to be more inclusive?

The details won’t come out as the girl is a minor and the case is sex related. It’s not that important, I just figured someone already knew the nature of the crime.

I’m fully aware who is responsible.

Age of consent in many states is 16. Go back a hundred years and the laws were even younger.

This is not about being an “adult”, since a 16 year old may legally consent to sex. 18 is adult you say, but they may not drink alcohol. They die as Soldiers for us though.

Go figure.

Yep, true.

You know, I’m not quite sure what to think of that. I’m not sure how the severity of a crime can lead to adult charges in some cases but not others.

I’d like it to be uniform, I don’t think 17 year olds should get juvenile charges for murder ever. That is an adult crime if there ever was one.

The idea is to protect people in that vulnerable group from people who are older, 18 and above, Bruce Colton, state attorney for Florida’s 19th circuit, said, according to the station....The statute specifically says that consent is not a defense.

The reports shows her age as 18 at the time of this. The facebook page for support are from people who do not live in the area so they are using this as a purpose of gay rights. I hope the police chief and family stay strong.

I think the girl was stupid for doing that in a school restroom. I’m not even going to address the homosexual part of it. Why give it more attention.

I think the parents of the 18 year old were negligent in their duties as a parent. They knew about the relationship and surely they must know the law.

Right before my son turned 18 I made him very aware of this—I printed him the law and showed him stories of boys charged over this.

I also always wanted to know that the parents of the girl he dated approved (if they were even a year younger), even before he turned 18. It just makes sense in today’s world.

The school has a responsibility, too—they can’t have kids having sex in the restrooms. That would leave the school open to all sorts of legal issues.

The girl was wrong and her parents failed her. It is as simple as that to me.

Apparently they're supposed to take a one-year break.

No, they are not supposed to be doing it before their nervous systems are even mature. Not that hard to figure out, teach.

Better yet, let your kids know they are not to be having sex before they are 18 and while they live in your house.

Yes, I understand that, but I have also understood that the younger girl was not at the age of consent at the time the incident occurred.

Also, the law does not always makes sense, and in many cases it makes no sense, but that does not mean it won’t snag you.

In this case, if this older girl was molesting my minor daughter, I’d press charges against her too.

So they were dating legally when she was 17, but once she had a birthday, it's suddenly illegal. That's a rough one to sell.

Why, where a 20 year old could have been drinking for years but it's illegal for a bar to serve him a drink. The next day could be his b'day, and no longer illegal to serve him.

We have 'age appropriate' laws, in case you didn't know. What's your rush for them to disappear because you don't agree with them. Aren't we going down the hell hole fast enough for you?

Damn straight on that. Male or a female. After they are of legal age, it’s their baby but not until not under my roof would I allow my child to be molested.

Guess the gay folks need to learn the term “jailbait” too.

I agree. If this was a boy/girl relationship wouldn’t the 18 y/o be charged? What makes this different?

I live in FL. One of the first things I drilled into my sons heads was once they turned 18 they were NEVER to get in a car or place alone with anyone under that age without another person present.

People may say I am overreacting but SO many times I have seen people persecuted over some sexual claim stemming from this. If more people observed this rule, there would be so much less trouble.

I don’t care whether this girl was a lesbian or not. You never touch a minor. Here in FL they will practically hang you for touching a minor in any way. That includes a gang of kids beating up on yours that you go out to try and stop. (Seen it here)

If they actually waited until the girl turned 18 to charge her with anything, then you’re looking at an abuse of power.

You're not Kate turned 18 on 14 August 2012. before she even met the 14½ girl entering Freshman year at Sebastian River High School. Activity occured Nov-Dec 2012. They became aware of it in January. After Police investigated, Katie was arrested in February.

AFTER the younger girl turned 15, the perp's parents launched their "Free Kate" pettion claiming "our sweet Kate in being prosectuted for having a 15 year old girlfriend, Kate was only 17".

Oh yeah, Kate's parents are also linrs.

For the entire period between them meeting and Kate being arrested, the younger girl was 14, and Crazy Eyes was 18, legally adult.
