Washington Bridge Collapses Despite Stimulus
USBC News ^ | 13,05,26 | USBC News Wire

...It is unclear why the bridge was allowed to fall in a state of repair which allowed a catastrophic collapse, since the Obama administration pushed through a $787 billion economic stimulus package as one of his first acts. The stimulus was criticized by many for failing to address the underlying problems with the economy at the time, and many feared the money would have been better spent in the private sector.

Titled, the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act,” Obama touted the virtue of the act, as a way of providing “shovel ready” jobs to Americans, who were struggling during an economic downturn. Many are pointing to the bridge collapse as an example of mismanagement and inefficiency of the Obama administration’s 2009 stimulus package...

More like it broke because of the stimulus not "in spite" of it...

It fell because an overheight truck rammed the girders at full speed.

That because the Stimulus went to Community Organizing Nonprofit to spend as for job training welfare recipients to perform new Green Economy jobs.

In other words it was wasted , stolen, misallocated or otherwise squandered. Stimulus was about Politicians taking a huge pile of money and making sure it had to be spent on some nebulous, poorly defined goals in a ridiculously short amount of time with minimal oversight.

Pretty much a license for the Obama Administration pay offs for supporters to steal

The writer of this story is either high on hallucinogens or a lier. There was no problem with the bridge until an over-height truck barreled through striking the upper support structure. This could have been a brand new bridge and it would have collapsed from such an event. What makes me angrier is they spent all of the stimulus money saying it would go to infrastructure. Well, how much went to infrastructure? If they are asking for more money, I would guess that the money was squandered and did not go to infrastructure. Do we trust this present government for more of our money? I say hell no!

I can tell ya this.....If the meme becomes the “Collapsed bridge=Obama squandered stimulus” the MSM will do back-flips and the 1st investigative reporting they've done in yrs showing how the truck caused the collapse.....the issue is a lose-lose trap!...Be Careful

I’ll point this out....having looked at the database for stimulus projects for many hours. There was this one community which asked for around $30,000 for sidewalks. What they didn’t mention, and it was later discovered after giving the town the money....was that they were going to rip up sidewalks already in place, and just re-pour the concrete. Some guy’s cousin was going to get this contract, and probably pocket a couple thousand in profit.

A clear failure of the Stimulus to pay for a truck height radar detection system with flashing yellow and red lights and foghorns!

An administrator somewhere with a list of projects is squirming in his waffle bottomed seat today ~ instead of out on a fishing boat on the Columbia!

This stuff angers me also. The bridges in this country are INSPECTED on a regular basis. The ones that are “inadequate” typically are so because they don’t have shoulders, don’t have bike lanes, don’t have bird-watching stations, or whatever. If vehicles are allowed on them, then THEY ARE NOT DANGEROUS. Yes, there may be a weight limitation, but there will ALWAYS be weight limitations on bridges. The idea that they are unsafe a FRAUD perpetuated by disgruntled civil engineers and toll-road shills.

I witnessed an example of “stimulus” spending at a Interstate rest stop in Louisiana. A large sign read : “Your stimulus at work”. We stopped at this already luxurious rest stop and found only two men working to create a patio out back. Meanwhile, when we went into the rest rooms, which is why people stop there, they were old, shopworn, and rusty. Maybe they just hadn’t gotten to work on them yet. The price tag for such makeshift work: over 1 million.

“It fell because an overheight truck rammed the girders at full speed.”......

That would be a pretty good reason. Ripping the bridge structure apart with a semi-truck was almost certain to cause major structural damage. But then, if you listened to Nancy “dumb ass’ Pelosi, it was the “sequestor” fault, without a doubt. You be the “judge”.

I’m blaming Clinton, why didn’t he fix all these bridges instead of building a ‘Bridge to the Future’ that goes nowhere? didn’t he have a surplus?

the 4th term of the clowntoon administration at work, sort of,, when they get around to it.. and stop doing photo ops.

I keep waiting for the democrats to claim credit for the new bridge over the Detroit river that Canada is paying for.

It took a republican governor to get that deal done after 30 years of trying. The democrats were rabid in their opposition because they won’t be able to skim the Canadian controlled money.

Journalistic mal practice.

The collapse was the result of structural failure induced by force applied to the structure that destroyed the structural integrity

It was catastrophe by truck driver.

The journalist’s license should be revoked.

The bridge's design was, IIRC the term, "fault critical." One thing breaking could bring down the entire bridge. I was amazed to see our local liberal rag, The Quad City Times ran a piece correctly blaming this on Congress saving money back at the time of its construction. More redundant and thus safer designs were available, but were more expensive. In Ike's rush to complete the Interstate Highway system corners were crossed. Thousands of other fault critical bridges were built and are still in use.
