Confidential report lists U.S. weapons system designs compromised by Chinese cyberspies
Washington Post ^ | May 27, 2013 | By Ellen Nakashima

Posted on 05/27/2013 8:19:32 PM PDT by Brad from Tennessee

Designs for many of the nation’s most sensitive advanced weapons systems have been compromised by Chinese hackers, according to a report prepared for the Pentagon and to officials from government and the defense industry.

Among more than two dozen major weapons systems whose designs were breached were programs critical to U.S. missile defenses and combat aircraft and ships, according to a previously undisclosed section of a confidential report prepared for Pentagon leaders by the Defense Science Board.

Experts warn that the electronic intrusions gave China access to advanced technology that could accelerate the development of its weapons systems and weaken the U.S. military advantage in a future conflict.

The Defense Science Board, a senior advisory group made up of government and civilian experts, did not accuse the Chinese of stealing the designs. But senior military and industry officials with knowledge of the breaches said the vast majority were part of a widening Chinese campaign of espionage against U.S. defense contractors and government agencies.

The significance and extent of the targets help explain why the Obama administration has escalated its warnings to the Chinese government to stop what Washington sees as rampant cybertheft. . .

I’d like to see an assessment on how well the Chinese are doing compared to the KGB during its heyday. It would be somewhat amusing if we were deliberately feeding them crap, causing planes to fall out of the sky, nuclear meltdowns, train collisions and so on.

It is not fair to compare the success of the Chinese with the KGB.

At their peak, the KGB did not have access to AG Holder’s DOJ records.

The FOX News case goes back to 2009, the AP case goes back a year. Holder did everything he could to keep FOX and AP in the dark about these “investigations.” Holder apparently believed he could suppress the FOX News subpoena documents indefinitely or he wouldn't have perjured himself in front of Congress ten days ago answering questions about the AP case. And I think he thought until this month he could keep the AP documents sealed by repeatedly going back to the judge and citing national security.

They used these espionage cases as an excuse to go through phone and email records to identify confidential sources working in the government leaking to the media a variety of information—sometimes unfavorable to the administration. I think Obama was obsessed with finding out who, if anyone, in the White House was talking to FOX. He hates FOX so at the earliest opportunity the DOJ acted.

So, in time we might find out that the DOJ has already snooped through the phone records of the Post and every other news outfit in D.C. And whatever the DOJ does under the cover of the law there are private entities connected to the DNC, the leftist super-PAC’s and big labor with the resources to snoop, smear and intimidate outside the law.

Or totally brilliant. What they are hopefully doing is keeping the true designs off the internet and letting the Chinese hack are things full of backdoors, poison pills, massive malware, virus and Trojan farms.

You have to remember that what the Chinese are getting if they are getting anything worthwhile are prototype designs. Full production models are a different animal. Even the developers don't know what the final product will look like until years of testing take place. This whole report smacks of kabuki theater if you ask me.

Hussein likes to tell us they’re “idiots” rather than conspirators, and would like us to believe the headlines verbatim, but some of us remember the Great Clinton GIVING missile technology to the Chinese and then “justifying” it to us because we weren’t being “fair”.

Hussein will do anything to hurt America.

Why should we ever assume ANYTHING happens the way the headlines present it?

There was a story on the BBC News just last night about how the Chinese got a hold of the plans of some very expensive and super secret intelligence complex that the Australians just built...or are still building (can't recall which).

IMO,in addition to the Chinese government employing millions of hackers to probe Western computers there can be no doubt that 99% of the "students","businessmen" and "diplomats" found in advanced, democratic countries (the US.Europe,Japan, etc) are spies.

The Pentagon needs to form a task force of accountants to tally up the dollar value of everything the Chines have stolen from the U.S. government and private sector going back 30 years. Then balance that against the Treasury’s debt to China. China would still end up owing us money.

Brad, thanks for your concern, but seriously, I wouldn't worry about this.

Our diverse military, with its strong LGBT contingents, Affirmative Action promotions, women in combat, and kind and gentle ROE's should be able to handle the CHICOM easily, because as you may know, much of their defense industry is not ecologically sensitive, contributes to Global Warming, and has a Carbon Footprint like you just wouldn't believe.

Plus, Brad, you ignore the strong leadership we have in the WH under Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. (AKA II, Barry Soetoro, etc.) This guy is tough, and when he's on vacation, Valerie Jarrett is in charge. She's even tougher. Besides, she is in constant and instant communication with Reggie Love, who always knows where our fearless POTUS is.

You are so covered, Dude!

That's not even the worst of it. I read recently that in some rural areas of China, thoughtless peasants hunt, fish and harvest wild fruits, oblivious to the danger they could be preying on any number of critically endangered species.

While I would like to think that our counter-intelligence people would plant sleeper programs in the stuff that the Red Chinese are stealing, I just don’t think that our military leadership, and certainly not our political leadership, is smart enough to do it, or don’t have the balls to do it.

The communists have a goal, world domination (direct and indirect influence/power). They have a plan for it, and always have.

We have Obama, Holder, Clapper, Brennan, Biden and Dempsey.

In other words, we are up Shit’s Creek with the paddle shoved up our butt.

We got a major preview of the Red Chinese espionage and influence-buying offensive during the Clinton administration, but did we learn anything? Nope, and Al Gore got fat on Red Chinese money, as did the Democrat Party.

About the same time as the Democrats and the Clintons were getting millions from the Mafia, esp. their controlled Laborers International Union of North America.

And the corruption continues unabated and unchallenged. WHY?????

I don’t know any Maine jokes but I know a Vermont joke which you have probably heard.

A partially deaf man was in the habit of
attending town meetings, auctions and such with
a neighbor would yell a running narrative of the
proceedings into the man’s ear. One afternoon at
a political rally a man running for state office
rose to the podium and launched into a speech.
The speaker went on for several minutes before
the man nudged his neighbor and asked, “What’s he
saying?” The neighbor gave a shrug then yelled
in the man’s ear: “He don’t say!”

I'm not surprised. This may be reciprocal and serve as a fail-safe. The U.S. is as deeply embedded or more in China's defense infrastructure, particularly on the R&D end. When Nixon went to China he wasn't just visiting the Great Wall and kissing babies. Something profound happened between Nixon and Mao that goes on today.

I knew an individual, an aeronautical engineer, who was working in China on their missile program in the early 1970’s. He said he worked mostly in a complex at the bottom of a deep gorge. The gorge offered protection from Soviet missiles because of the limits of their ballistic trajectories. He said at that time the Chinese believed an overt strike against their missile and nuclear weapons program by the Soviets was imminent. Later on I read where H.R. Haldeman said the Russians approached the State Department asking the U.S. to sign off on surgical strikes against these programs but Nixon said no.

The conflict between the U.S. and USSR evolved a balancing mechanism which was mutually assured destruction. Beginning with Nixon and Kissinger the formula for developing the balance with China evolved into a symbiotic relationship whose highlight might have been Clinton signing the treaty giving China Most Favored Nation trade status. It's not possible to put any of this on a bumper sticker.
