Robert Dole’s Two Cents
New York Sun ^ | May 28, 2013 | Masthead Editorial

The Democrats are in a swoon over the fact that Senator Dole is complaining about the Republicans. The former Republican leader in the upper house told Christopher Wallace of Fox News that the GOP “ought to put a sign on the national committee doors that says ‘closed for repairs.’” He reckons the GOP lacks for “ideas and positive agendas.” Mr. Wallace asked Mr. Dole whether he could make it in today’s Republican Party “I doubt it,” Mr. Dole said dolefully. “Reagan couldn’t have made it. Certainly Nixon couldn’t have made it, cause he had ideas. We might have made it, but I doubt it.”

Mr. Dole mightn’t want to get too far up on his high horse. Oh, we understand, he was a war hero who twice rose to the Republican national ticket — once, in 1976, as the vice president candidate running with President Ford. The two of...

The jibe that Republican Party today lacks for ideas we don’t buy. The most important idea today is constitutional conservatism. We have remarked on this before. It is different than either paleo- or neo- or libertarian- or Christian-conservatism, to number the varieties that have given good service in recent decades. It looks on the principles that animated the American founding and were enshrined in the parchment that is the supreme law of the land. It welcomes all races, classes, and creeds (or those who hold no religious creed), so long as they are prepared to pursue a close reading of the Constitution. It’s a glorious idea that leads to a strong foreign policy, limited government, and sound money. It protects rights not by grants from the government but by restricting the power of the government. If these ideas triumph it will be because of the rising generation of the GOP.

Bob Dole said a lot of dumb things when he was younger as well. Age has nothing to do with his RINO stupidity.

BTW, how old is this guy, 100? Time for Bob to STFU and go home.

“And Dole was responsible for the republicans caving to Clinton in the ‘95 shutdown.” AND he was PRIMARILY responsible for WEAKA$$ George HW Bush breaking his “No New Taxes””Pledge” in 1990.

Dole and Sillybus were two people from Kansas that Dorothy should have taken to the Land of Odds with her and left there.

“I like Bob Dole...”

I guess you also like” being out on that limb by yourself! Dole never saw a tax he didn’t like. I see him as the one the Boner emulates today. I just wish the old bastard would sit quietly and shut up! I’ve had it up to my a$$ with “war heros” who should have stayed in the military because it was the only thing that they were good at, instead of capitalizing on their war exploits to gain access to our legislatures. Dole can never erase his sorry record by pointing to what he did in WWII, and likewise McLame.

McCain wasn’t in WW2. :-} Just joshing. Dole had a wry wit and an acerbic tongue that could be endearing to certain of us when he aimed them at lefties. Hard to not like a guy when they get blown up and rehab themselves though. Doesn’t mean I want him to be POTUS or Mayor for that matter. For me anyway.

He could not have stayed in the military. His injuries took away the use of his right arm so that staying in the miliary was not an option. There was nothing else he could do in the ‘real’ world so that politics was his only option. Poor option but that was all that was left for him. GOP-e loved him because of his war injuries.

Dole still hasn’t figured out why he lost. He, like McCain is a RINO who deesn ‘t understand that compromise is OK, as long as both sides truly compromise.

I remember that with Clinton almost drowning in scandal, Dole couldn’t bring himself to use any of it. I remember during one of the debates Clinton almost dared him to bring it up and for half a second I saw Dole considering it... and then change the subject. I knew then Dole was toast.

And if you are running against one of the most corrupt presidents in history and you dare not mention it, maybe you have good reason not to go there. Who knows.

the currently inflated value of Dole’s $.02 is only about .006 or .008 cents max in today’s coinage.

Very few people would stoop to pick it up off the street.

Gosh, it's Bob Dole. I thought he'd gone to the elephant's graveyard. (He really sounded bad in the interview.)

Here is a man, who as Senate Majority Leader, never failed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by rolling over for the Donkeys. Elizabeth Dole has more testosterone in her than her husband.

He would have done the country a greater service if he had sold pencils on a street corner. We have such screwed up values when it comes to choosing our leaders.
