The Chicago Sun-Times has laid off its entire photography staff, and plans to use freelance photographers going forward, the newspaper said.
About 20 full-times staffers received the news Thursday morning, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The local paper here has gone to this system and I haven’t noticed any decline in quantity or quality.
Besides, with photoshop they can manufacture pictures they same way they do with news copy. Who needs photogs?

What reporters? Do you mean those people scanning the internet for articles they can use to fill up their newspaper? Seems like all you need to have in order to publish a newspaper now is someone who knows how to cut and paste.
There is more digging and research done by the people on FR than in any of the newspapers I’ve seen lately.

There are some shops where reporters can take the photos but there are some where union rules do prevent them from taking photos.
I’ve had to hold a microphone for a news photographer who came to shoot footage of a book signing and wanted to interview the author but couldn’t because union rules prevented him from holding the microphone, which I did for him.
