Unapproved genetically modified wheat from Monsanto found in Oregon field
Washington Post ^ | May 30, 2013 | Steven Mufson

Posted on 05/30/2013 8:00:45 PM PDT by Ron C.

Japan, the largest market for U.S. wheat exports, suspended imports from the United States and canceled a major purchase of white wheat on Thursday after the recent discovery of unapproved genetically modified wheat in an 80-acre field in Oregon.

How the altered crop made its way to the Oregon field remains a mystery. The strain was developed by Monsanto to make wheat resistant to the company’s own industry-leading weed killer. Monsanto tested the type of altered seed in more than a dozen states, including Oregon, between 1994 and 2005, but it was never approved for commercial use.

Yet the Agriculture Department reported that recent tests identified the strain after an Oregon farmer trying to clear a field sprayed Monsanto’s herbicide, Roundup, and found that the wheat could not be killed.

The report rattled U.S. wheat markets. In addition to Japan’s action, the European Union, which imports more than 1 million tons of U.S. wheat a year, said that it was following developments “to ensure E.U. zero-tolerance policy is implemented.” It asked Monsanto to help detection efforts in Europe.

When it gets to the point of worship, the greenies quit caring about being consistent about what they hate.

Ya think Monsanto is wicked too?

Anyhow it seems the irony of ironies that JAPAN, the home of Monsanto, would quit buying wheat from the US if it is Roundup proof!

That’s right. Most true greenies hate Obama but tolerate him. Obama is a sonofabitch but he is their sonofabitch.

I’m sure there could be special purpose wheat, raised from ancient Holy Land seeds, if someone wants it enough.

The only thing more evil than Monsanto is our own pathetic congress under the leadership of Cryboehnor whose members just love the cash, the bribes, to keep Monsanto in bithness.

Have to agree with the libtards on this, there are evil corporations.

Monsanto is the kingpin, just shudder at what the payoff to local judges are.

And up the food chain.

Studies have also shown that genes can jump across species.

Can you link that? And are you talking about similar species or is just a free for all?

Humans have been altering the genetic inheritance of crops and animals for thousands of years. No one living in America has ever eaten “wild corn,” or “original wheat.” It’s all been modified. Genetically speaking.

I’ve never heard of my Indian ancestors crossing a wild cornfield with a bacterium. Their selection process probably didn’t involve transferring microbial genes to their corn genome.

Wheat that is resistant to round up?

So what is the problem here? Round up is a weed killer. Weeds are, by definition, unwanted vegetation. Wheat is not an unwanted vegetation.

I’m reading Monsanto is evil, but what is evil about a food product being resistant to a weed killer?

You must mean the crooks at Monsanto who are using bribed government officials to force farmers to buy their seed.

Yes. Those poor farmers who are being forced to plant a crop that is 10 times easier to grow and harvest resulting in greater yields for the farmers and lower prices for the consumers. You should get together with other hysterical fear mongers like Michael Moore and make a documentary about how scary genetics is -- especially when corporations profit from it!!!
