On May 19, 1865, Davis was imprisoned in a casemate at Fortress Monroe, on the coast of Virginia. He was placed in irons for three days. Davis was indicted for treason a year later. In December 1868 the court rejected a motion to nullify the indictment, but the prosecution dropped the case in February 1869.

...[A]t a reception held in New Orleans in May 1887, urged southerners to be loyal to the nation. He said, “United you are now, and if the Union is ever to be broken, let the other side break it.”

You’re evading the question donny.

His formulation is that slaveowners are ontologically evil.

Not that they did an evil thing, which is your formulation.

It’s an easy enough question: do you want to sign on to his formulation that slaveowners are evil?

It’s a yes or no question. You either agree with him or you don’t. So which is it?

And they have indeed broken it many times over — never more than right now.

And indentured service also took place in the south, in both cases with some trade (skills gained from practice) in value for value, in accordance with a contract.

By contrast, slavery inflicted on little children without their consent is particularly evil.

Slavery is evil. To own a slave is evil. To sell a slave is evil. That is my moral judgement. Yours may be different.

There are things that are more evil. Starting a war to further and extend slavery would be one of those things. The US didn’t do that. That would be the pretended confederacy that did the more evil thing.

Let me help you. The federal government had no power to regulate slavery in the various states. Accordingly, the states that permitted slavery permitted that evil, and the people of the state governments that could have ended that evil and did not missed a great chance to do good, to their great shame.

The great project of self government was diminished because some of the greatest proponents of independence were drivers of negro slaves. The presence of negro slavery was exploited by the British to hinder independence, and because of that weakness in the states, the battle against the British continued longer.

If you have a case, then seek resolution of it, by law, as required by Article 3 of the constitution.

Best general of the war, perhaps the best general of any war.

In that I agree with the assessment of RE Lee.

Was it better to be a slaveborn into servitude in North America as a rule than to be left in Niger or Ghana etc

Life expectancy and so forth

The descendents of that child you mention are sure better off .....no question of that

Which of historys slave legacies are worst.....given your focus on the institution

I think the Romans and Egyptians were far crueler

Take your time

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of G-d.

I have violated speed limits. That is not as bad as murder.
Slavery consisted of assault, battery, rape and kidnapping. That is certainly very very evil, but as 750,000 instances of murder due to those who wanted to further, protect, and extend slavery was certainly a worse evil.

The war to further, protect, and extend slavery was far worse than slavery itself.

Ha! No matter what you think of Lee, he was a far better general than Grant. Far better...and a more Godly man to boot.

Keep in mind, the majority of the southerners never owned a slave. Only 1 percent even owned over 100...

But I was wondering about your opinion of Grant as a person....??

If you were King

What exactly would you have done to resolve slavery issue in say 1859

Freedom

Compensation if any

What to do with them

Voting rights etc....men i presume

Education

Housing

Clothing

Food shelter

What to do with what .....one third or so of total southern population and those sprinkled about up north and border states

To avoid war....if you wished that

I have often lamented here that hotheads from both sides prevailed

Perhaps without the drain of slavery, Africa might be far more civilized than it is now, so such a comparison is not possible for honest mortals to make. Also without the benefit of work done by the slaves, the US might not be quite so civilized as it is now.

We just can’t honestly tell if people are better off in one place or another. We normally make assault, battery, rape and kidnapping illegal, because they are bad things, and don’t look at any ‘good things’ that may in theory result. We also tend to look at insurrection as a bad thing because it results in many deaths.

The American Revolution began with military force exerted by the crown against the various colonies, in violation of the rights of the citizens of the colonies, despite attempts to resolve differences. Faced with a war begun by the crown, after a long period, eventually representatives of the various colonies declared their independence. The war already begun by Britain was eventually lost by Britain.

By contrast, with no attempt to resolve differences per Article 3 of the constitution, the states of the pretended confederacy began a war against the United States. They lost it. The legal issue of secession was eventually resolved by Texas v. White. Secession is legal, but not as pretended by the various insurrectionists of 1860.

I would have proceeded as New Jersey proceeded.

In 1860 New Jersey had 18 permanent apprentices, essentially left over slaves. Persons underage would have been converted to apprentices. After the 7 year period of apprenticeship they would have been free. Persons over a certain age would be permanent apprentices.

The rape, assault, battery and kidnapping of apprentices/slaves would be forbidden, as rape battery and kidnapping of indentured servants was forbidden by law.

Not perfect, but probably better than a massive war.

I am not sure that Lee, the slave rapist, the man who sold slave girls to brothels was a godly man.

Grant inherited a slave. At that time he was living in a log cabin, cutting wood and trying to sell it on the street.
Within a week he had given the man his freedom.

By contrast, Lee, as executor of his father in law’s estate, went to court three times in attempts to deny freedom to the slaves that his father in law freed in his will.
