GESTURES OF LOVE

Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love . . . and weep with those who weep. —Romans 12:10-15

Cards...hundreds and hundreds of cards. Our mail carrier must have thought we were going for a world record. They came by the stack—day after day after day. It was just one of the many ways we knew that people cared for us as our family endured the painful first weeks after our teenage daughter Melissa died in a car accident.

But it wasn't just the cards that provided assurance of loving support. Food came in so fast we nearly filled up the freezer. Flowers filled every corner of the house, especially sunflowers...Melissa's favorite.

People sent pictures of her, blankets with verses, memorial gifts to her school, and books...lots of helpful books on trusting God with a broken heart. Then there were the e-mails, phone calls, and personal words of hope and help...promises of prayer. Offers to do anything we needed. All from friends following God's prompting.

Our aching hearts were lifted by these deeds too numerous to list but too beautiful to forget. The love behind these expressions carried us through days heavy with sorrow.

Look for people in need and follow the Lord's leading. Help heal their brokenness with gestures of love (Romans 12:10-15). Encourage them for God's glory.

Show And Tell

If you take a course on writing or attend a writer’s conference, you’ll likely hear the phrase, “Show, don’t tell.” In other words, “show” your readers what is happening, don’t just tell them. Don’t tell readers what you did; describe doing it.

One of the reasons we tend to tell rather than show is that it’s easier and faster. Showing how to do something requires time and effort. In teaching, it’s easier to tell students what’s wrong with what they did than to show them how to do it right. The latter, however, is more effective.

For thousands of years, the Jewish people had only the law telling them what to do and what not to do. But then came Jesus Christ, who showed them how to live the life God had been telling them about all along. Jesus didn’t just say, “Be humble”; He “humbled Himself” (Phil. 2:8). He didn’t just say, “Forgive others”; He forgave us (Col. 3:13). He didn’t just say, “Love God and your neighbors”; He demonstrated love by His actions (John 15:12).

Christ’s perfect example of love shows how great God’s love is for us and how we are to show His love to others.

He's finished the restoration on the 1940 Buick that his Great Grand-Pa left undone,. so I know he has the skills. Now as to speed I don't know but I know that Nate will harass him and that Nate’s Mom and his other Grand Parents will hound Nate's Daddy to finish the job too. 8^}

The day went reasonably well, thanks! Back for another ten-hour day tomorrow. We're probably going to finish Monday - then, who knows what? :)

We have a lot of things popping in our lives right now. I would ask for your prayers, and for those of any of my friends who view this post.

Nate I hope will be just like his Daddy was, when his Daddy got it new, when he was with me at Ft Knox in 1982 and his Daddy had to watch every move I and his Grandpa made and wanted to help. Those are great memories of my young son.

Family traditions...can’t beat it. You can always find something little ones can do to “help”. And they are sponges watching what you do. And the pride they have in doing their “job” well....
