Calgary student, 13, reprimanded for defending his classmate against a knife-wielding bully

Briar MacLean was sitting in class during a study period Tuesday, the teacher was on the other side of the room and, as Grade 7 bullies are wont to do, one kid started harassing another.

“I was in between two desks and he was poking and prodding the guy,” Briar, 13, said at the kitchen table of his Calgary home Friday.

“He put him in a headlock, and I saw that.”

He added he didn’t see the knife, but “I heard the flick, and I heard them say there was a knife.”

I heard the flick, and I heard them say there was a knife

The rest was just instinct. Briar stepped up to defend his classmate, pushing the knife-wielding bully away.

The teacher took notice, the principal was summoned and Briar went about his day. It wasn’t until fourth period everything went haywire.

“I got called to the office and I wasn’t able to leave until the end of the day,” he said.

That’s when Leah O’Donnell, Briar’s mother, received a call from the vice-principal.

“They phoned me and said, ‘Briar was involved in an incident today,’” she said. “That he decided to ‘play hero’ and jump in.”

Ms. O’Donnell was politely informed the school did not “condone heroics,” she said. Instead, Briar should have found a teacher to handle the situation.

“I asked: ‘In the time it would have taken him to go get a teacher, could that kid’s throat have been slit?’ She said yes, but that’s beside the point. That we ‘don’t condone heroics in this school.’ ”

Instead of getting a pat on the back for his bravery, Briar was made to feel as if he had done something terribly wrong. The police were called, the teen filed a statement and his locker was searched.

Yeah, having a nation filled with people looking out for others would just be awful... What we need is a society of people asking the government to solve problems for them.

Yeah.
Every time I see such mindless blather, I instantly think of the only rational reply :

"When seconds count, police are just minutes away."

Turned out later that his old man was a drunk that beat his kids and wife.

I had the same impression about that the kid that attacked me had a drunk of a father and received a carton cigarettes for a Christmas gift. Someone has to break the cycle, and I really think government isn't capable of doing it.

The message is that we should always defer to the “Authorities”.

Children are small people that are forming rules about the world around them.

The messages they get from the world have a great impact on them.

Touch stove, burns, don't do that. That kind of stuff.

Interactions with other people are the same. When exposed to seriously deranged people (public school teachers), children tend to have a warped view of the world.

My most holy and important duty for the rest of my life is to mentor my grandchildren in a rational way that my kids may not be able to do. I have to pass on chivalry to the boys, and standing up for what is right.

Not that my kids won't, but I've got more gravitas, being older than dirt.

I'm not THAT old.

Last I heard from the Declaration of Independence and the 10th Amendment... I AM the authority. Government depends on my acceptance of it.

They are correct:”They don’t condone heroics”. What they call “heroics” requires initiative + confidence + testosterone. As the “vice principal” lacks all three, Briar put him to shame. And, yes, it would have been fine with them if the victim hadhad his throat cut so long as everyone followed procedure because in government schools :”Process is our most important product”!

Call me a contrarian, but since I was a teenager, I have held that it should be the reverse... the "authorities" should defer to their employers.

The older I get, the more strongly I feel about that.

The insanity of the modern world is maddening. This school policy is like changing the Marine slogan “Improvise, Adapt and Overcome” to “Observe the problem, then go seek and inform a superior officer (so he can contact his superior) to find out what to do when lives are in danger on the battlefield”.

Common sense has been tossed out the door.

Bullies are almost always the product of violent, dysfunctional homes, especially an abusive father.

Well you really cannot “beat them into behaving like men” although you may be able to open a helpful discussion once you’ve made it plain you will not be overcome by their guff. Helpful means with God in the middle of it.

You can, however beat them into not bothering you anymore, and that's close enough, in my book.

If your book is God’s book, it often is not close enough.

If only someone had explained that to me when I was 7 years old. I would have exploited that information.

Trust me that my grandsons have been briefed, and they aren't quite 7, yet.

Johnny,
I might be a few years younger than you, but I am looking forward to my my grandchildren and giving them a better world than what we have. Your method is spot on. I plan the same thing.

My daughters are 16 and 18. I have to say that my word has declined recently due to their external influences, but I have a good 15 years of filling their brains with the right message. To this day, both of my daughters want to stay at home and raise a family (something that I have not been able to accomplish, since my wife has had to work one and off over the years.) I take that as a good sign.

I will continue to try to find ways to influence my children and when I have them, my grandchildren. I am going to be the granddaddy that takes his grandchildren fishing and hunting for the first time, teach them to provide for themselves, have confidence and most importantly have confidence and the ability to be happy in almost any circumstance.

Found a Youtube interview with this kid. Very heartwarming to hear this kind of attitude still exists despite our education system.

we ‘don’t condone heroics in this school.

Actually they do condone heroics. But these days heroics is defined as an elitist Georgetown University coed demanding free contraception, and an NBA basketball player announcing he is homosexual immediately prior to going free-agent when there is a real need for some buzz to ensure a new contract.

Saving someone's life, not so much.

Teachers and judges are of the same mindset. That is a curse on civilized people that societal decisions are made/given to other individuals to set the standards and punishments of others.I do believe that there has to be some form/means of tempering society between good and bad people/actions. However, I don’t like any individual public persons pontificating over others especially when so many themselves are morally corrupt.

“Good kids have no rights whatsoever.”

No, here’s the problem: you can’t make money off of them.
