Southern Baptists Plan to Leave Boy Scouts 'En Masse.'

(Newser) – The Boy Scouts of America's decision last month to allow gay members was made with the blessings of many churches and religious groups—but not all of them. And here's a pretty significant opponent: The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in America with 45,000 congregations and 16 million members, says it will now urge its followers to leave the Scouts, reports CNN. The Boy Scouts says Baptist churches currently sponsor nearly 4,000 units, containing more than 100,000 kids.

The Southern Baptist Convention will vote on a resolution to disaffiliate with the Scouts this month, and a spokesperson says he expects 99% of people to vote in support of it. "Southern Baptists are going to be leaving the Boy Scouts en masse," he says.

They won’t be as vulnerable if the dont accept big corporate sponsors. That was what weakened them to the homo lobby influence.

The girl scouts survived as a lesbian dominated organization and training ground for lesbians and socialist feminists.

Texas GS councils tend to be quite conservative. There are a few crazies like in any large group.

What about the other denominations? (OK, Episcopalians and PC USA exempted since they were way ahead of the BSA ).

That, or they need to reverse course on that recent vote, then go find a big wealthy sponsor that doesn't mind the controversy. Like the NRA, for example. It's not like that organization could be any more reviled by the Progressives, right?

I'm not sure if that would work legally, given the non-profit particulars (though Komen/Planned Parenthood could serve as a template), but that partnership would sure make some leftists' heads explode.

um no, that would be your public schools, a fair number of our private schools, and almost all of your universites

Sandra Fluck was not a Girl Scout but she was a student at Georgetown

Check out your local GS troops, they are led by soccer Mommies and no, the girls aren’t preoccupied with sex, mostly with camping selling cookies and earning badges, same as always and we troop leaders keep it that way.
No surrender down here in the trenches.
Hate to see the BS give up so easily to the radicals and run like scalded dogs..
Wimps.
Why give Boy Scouts away? Just keep on leading the troops morally straight and take on the agitators in the trenches and blow off their sensitivity workshops parades and training manuals. Never allow adults one-on-one with the kids, nor two homosexual leaders. Any “openly gay” teenage kid acts like a horn dog, verbal or physical, volunteer leader sends him home or make him camp in a tent with his parent.

Parents get to choose their kid’s Scout troop and leader or find another troop or start one. Works for us.

In my city, the homosexual activists were successful in prohibiting the BSA from recruiting in public schools.

Look for this to change now that the BSA has taken the position that homosexuality is morally straight.

All gay Troops will start to pop up in cities like San Francisco and elsewhere. Count on it.

Liberal churches will celebrate and support these perverts. Evangelicals are a minority.

I grew up southern Baptist and we had RA’s which was kind of like Christian boy scouts, at least that is how I explained it to my friends. My oldest son went through RA’s but sadly our church dropped it, tried some other programs and now does AWANA.

Why not just use all the same materials and denote as “not sanction” by the BSA.

The the GLBSA will sue these orgs for Trademark infringement. Anything remotely resembling the Boy Scouts will be attacked.

With congregational autonomy so fundamental to Baptists, it’s hard to imagine them doing anything “en masse.”

Got that right!

There will always be progressive activists out looking to make a "federal" case on any BSA unit that flounts the rules.

I think you mean either "flouts" or "flaunts".

flouts: (Verb) Openly disregard (a rule, law or convention): "these same companies still flout basic ethical practices".

flaunts:(Verb)Display (something) ostentatiously, esp. in order to provoke envy or admiration or to show defiance.

Not even close. If you look at the membership of the top 15 Protestant denominations, the combined membership of the United Methodists, ELCA, PCUSA, UCC and Episcopal Churches is about 19 million. In contrast, the membership of the other top Protestant denominations, including SBC, AoG, CoGiC, National Baptist, etc is over 41 million.

well, I am a former Methodist...

Every major denomination has split into at least two, with the liberal Situation Ethicists (cf. Joseph Fletcher) in one and the orthodox in the other. Among Lutherans, the ELCA is liberal, the LCMS (and Wisconsin Synod) are orthodox; among Presbyterians, the PCUSA is liberal, the PCA and RPC are orthodox; among Baptists, the American Baptists are liberal, the Southern Baptists are orthodox; in the Episcopal church, the orthodox are increasingly associating with overseas bishops such as in Uganda, while the liberals take over the American leadership. The United Methodist Church is the only non-splitter among the mainstream Protestant denominations, but it is becoming a shell of its former self, with the orthodox basically leaving for other orthodox denominations, either Wesleyan or non-Methodist.

I left the UMC for the LCMS in 1989 and haven't looked back since--ironically enough, it was the experience of Lutheran Cursillo in 1982 that was the first eye-opener, and a former Baptist missionary who had become LCMS who led me there.

Brilliant idea! Boy Scouts with leading sponsor of NRA - would’ve been perfect. I’m surprised the BSA leadership didn’t think of something like that.

Surely there are enough conservative corporations that could have made up the difference.

Unless the majority of the BSA board really were in favor of this.

I used to think that, too. Has something changed on the ground level that we are missing? I suppose the 1916 Congressional Charter is still in effect, but when the House Judiciary subcommittee terminated the designation process in 1992, did that affect all previous charters or were they grandfathered? What makes me question this is the incorporation of the Baden-Powell Scout Association in the U.S. during 2002 as a non-profit. I would have thought BSA would have put the kybosh on the BP-SA.

Keep your eye on OnMyHonor.Net this summer. John Stemberger said they plan to present an alternative to BSA. There is a natural affiliation between the BSA and the NRA, but think about it - the NRA needs all of its donations just to fight BHO/AG-EH/Mayor-Doomberg.

The ~23 members of the BSA National Executive Committee who drafted the "new membership standard", i.e., inclusion of open homosexual youths, told us back in APR 2013 that a majority of the FORTUNE 500 companies represented on the BSA National Council advocated for the change. They totally blew over all the BSA internal polls which showed the majority of the BSA volunteers wanted the status quo to remain. The BSA National Executive Committee hijacked the agenda and simultaneously knuckled under to the homosexualists.
