In a recent column, the Washington Examiner’s Timothy P. Carney reported that he received an email from an IRS employee who was a member of an anti Tea Party Facebook group. One of my IRS correspondents had an interesting detail on his social media profile. He belongs to a Facebook group titled “Target the Shutdown at the Tea Party States.” Created in the run-up to the 2011 debt-ceiling showdown, the group’s Facebook page advocated a hard-nosed tactic for President Obama to take in negotiating with House Republicans:

It is Mr. Carney’s right to part of such a group, but it is very telling all the same, isn’t it?
Exactly why those who came before us always believed that it wasn’t a good idea to allow government bureaucrats to be members of unions.
It is every citizen’s right to freely assemble with a group of like minded people, but those people shouldn’t be able to use government to oppress others.
Since we can’t say a person can’t work in a department of government because it has the power to oppress people,
the simple conclusion is that that department cannot exist.
I do agree that is every citizen’s right. However, that doesn’t mean they are the best fit for certain government jobs (i.e. teachers, IRS employees, etc.)
Government workers are “public servants” and should be held to the highest standards.
My husband is a government employee. During the hiring process, he was required to furnish user names of any social networking sites to which he belonged.
I don’t have a problem with it. How else do you make the government accountable?

Watching the Congressional hearings is not for the faint of heart, or those susceptible to high blood pressure.
Example : Acting IRS commissioner Daniel Warfel, "There was a fundamental failure by IRS management to prevent inconsistent treatment of applicants [for tax exempt status.]
Government abuse is now so widespread, that we must now carefully parse everything they say. What is wrong with that statement?
Two things, if my paranoia and cynicism in government is justified.
First, does that mean that if the IRS consistently equally abused ALL applicants, there would be no problem to criticize and correct?
Second, the statement is based on a false premise that we are forced to accept in simply deigning to judge the statement : That the illegal criminal treatment was not INSTIGATED and maintained by IRS management itself? Both local and in D.C.!
Anyone obsessed with the mindless "legislators must be careful not to overreach" can go to hell!
It is impossible to overreach in slapping down naked, arrogant criminal tyranny!
The new normal... chasing criminal behavior to the top is now the new definition of "overreaching!"

The IRS abuse shows us that the IRS shouldn’t exist.
Their is no way to keep its employees from acting as they did,
and, invariably, such positions of power will be infested by leftists.
Are all IRS employees union members?
Union or not, I would expect IRS employees to naturally fear any group that wants to reduce or abolish the IRS. But belonging to a union doubles that fear.
If the IRS would go away (or 90% of it), that would be my first choice. However, I don’t see it really happening any time soon.
Any government worker, in my opinion, needs to be heavily vetted and have it happen frequently. I think teachers and police officers should have background checks quarterly.
It seems like every time you turn the news on there is some teacher sex-scandal, and then you see their Facebook, MySpace, etc. pages, and WOW—they were just flaunting it!
I guess my main point is that if one decides to become a public servant, he should realize it trumps his right to privacy/free assembly in certain ways (if he wants to keep his job).
That group would include about 200 million citizens that are pissed. They better pray to God we don't find out where they live.

Congressional investigators are probing the highest echelons of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C., in connection with the agency’s targeting of conservative groups, according to documents obtained by National Review Online. Those documents, provided by an IRS employee who asked to remain anonymous, indicate that those being asked to provide computer data to investigators include the agency’s chief counsel, William J. Wilkins, and both of his deputies. The chief counsel is one of just two political appointments at the IRS made by the president.
Investigators asked the IRS to gather all data from the computers of several employees throughout the agency, and their request, according to the source, was broadened late last week to include over a dozen employees in the chief counsel’s office. They include chief counsel William Wilkins as well as his deputy chief counsel for operations, Christopher Sterner and his deputy chief counsel for technical matters, Erik Corwin. Investigators are also mining the computer data of two lawyers in the chief counsel’s office responsible for procedures and administration, and nine others who oversee tax-exempt and government entitites. In all, the hard drives of 19 lawyers in the chief counsel’s office are being turned over to investigators.

Seems that after doing a Pro-bono task for Rev Wright Wilkins gets a great job at the IRS. Chicago style payback.

The IRS initiated an investigation early this year after a speech by Obama at a 50th anniversary celebration of the church last June. It was a reference by Obama to his presidential candidacy in a talk otherwise focused on faith that caught the agency’s attention.
Tax laws prohibit non-profits — including churches — from engaging in political speech or promoting candidates. The IRS can withdraw an organization’s tax-free status if the organization is found to violate the rule.
Obama has been a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago — a UCC congregation — for more than 20 years. The church has been in the headlines for several months now as the congregation lead by the controversial Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
WilmerHale was retained after church officials interviewed several firms, according to partner William Wilkins. “We were so interested in the case we offered to do it pro bono,” Wilkins says.”
