We had a man of the mind, a Conservative / Libertarian talk show host during the Clinton years here in MI, The Late Mark Scott who did just that and was a Marine in Korea.

flying the flag upside down can also be a military tactic to inform incoming personnel of an infiltration

I have no problem flyng it upside down if need be, as it does no permanent damage to the flag. burning is a different story
