Chris Christie sets special election to decide Lautenberg replacement

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called Tuesday for a special election later this year to decide who will fill the seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg, though he did not say whom he might appoint in the interim.

The Republican governor, during a press conference in Trenton, said he wants to make sure New Jersey voters have a "voice and a choice"

He set the primary for Aug. 13 and the general election for Oct. 16.

The announcement ended some -- but not all -- of the speculation about Christie's handling of the open seat. Lautenberg, a Democrat and the oldest member of the U.S. Senate, died Monday after complications from viral pneumonia at age 89. While colleagues paid tribute to the legacy of the World War II veteran, political observers launched into heavy speculation on how the popular Republican governor would move to fill the position.

Christie faced conflicting state laws in deciding when to have the election. He could have waited until November 2014, or possibly this November. But Christie said Tuesday it was worth the expense to the state to hold a special election earlier.

"The citizens of New Jersey need to have an elected representative to the United States Senate and have it as soon as possible," he said.

Christie knows that the Dems will strongarm the election, like they did when they got Lausyberg elected, and the Dems will retain the seat.

A leader, Christie the obama hugger ain’t!!

The best situation would probable to put Tom Kean Sr. In as a temporary replacement. Tom Kean Jr. to run in October. Most voters would know the difference and just vote for the familiar name.

A democrat governor would have appointed a democrat for the 18 months, even if the “departing” senator was a republican.

Christie is positioning for the democrat votes when he decides to run for higher office, or for re-election as governor.

I know Governor Christie. Nice guy. But if there was any thought of voting for him in 2016 after the media anoints him as Hillary’s opponent, that is now gone.

I would sooner write in Lautenberg for President. Both are dead to me.

Instead of naming a ‘favorable’ EVEN a RINO, can imagine someone like Torch getting the R nomination. Or whoever BO wants.

Hell, they do it in NY

Exactly. He will get a Democrat elected with their usual “winning” strategy.

Chris Christie just threw the Republican Party on the bus. Even if he appoints a Republican until November, he gave up a golden opportunity to have one more Republican in the US Senate until the HOR and some vulnerable US Senators have to worry about re-election. It would also be time for that Republican US Senator to get established.

I suspect he came up with this is an intelligent way to look reasonable. Instead, yet again, he looks like a traitor within the Republican Party.

Christie did not want Cory Booker on the ballot above his name in November to help his (D) opponent. He wants to pad his win totals to help his 2016 run. Tom Kean Sr. will be named interim Sen. until then.

There. Now you know the full story. You may now return to your regularly-scheduled thread.

“Tom Kean Sr. will be named interim Sen. until then.”

You got that right.

Thanks for nothing, Christie.
