USGS map showing where the earthquake was located
HILO, Hawaii East Hawaii was shaken after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, after a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Big Island. The United States Geological Survey later upgraded the quake to a magnitude 5.6, before being lowered back to a 5.3.
The USGS centered the earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, 33 miles southeast of Pahala in the southern Kau district.
Emergency officials say no tsunami was generated.
The temblor was felt across Hawaii Island. The quake shook homes in Hilo for a few moments before settling down. The incident sent local users of social media chattering away, describing how and where they felt the quake.

His support here is not as absolute as so many presume.
Of course -- I used to watch Magnum PI & Hawaii Five-0 all the time.
Tongue in cheek, he speaks..........
Only fair Oahu had all the action, more than 70% of the state lives there, most in Honolulu. I hate cities and was so happy to leave that island. I like being in a backwater in the tropics............
“You gys do know ther is more than one island to the state of Hawaii?”
Yes, hundreds of islands.
Being from California, I have been through many earthquakes. There the quakes were of the rolling, shaking kind....that seemed to last a long time. This quake today was completely different. It was very sharp and jolted the whole house, but it did not last longer than about 5 seconds, there was no rolling and no aftershock.
No damage inside the house...things knocked off shelves or things like that.
I’m glad you’re okay. You’ll be having the house structure examined nevertheless?
he came over on vacation 6 weeks after she died and threw her ashes in the “the blowhole”, at a highway pullover stop
same place he tossed his mother's ashes
of course now every vacation he goes back there and says little prayer at “the blowhole”... sarc
seems like it was a shallow quake, unlike the very very deep quakes that are tearing the earth apart under the north and south and east pacific
We own 2 acres in Hawaiian Paradise Park and about 7 years ago was planning on building on it and moving there. Long story why it didn’t happen but I am always regretting that it didn’t.
Island must’ve tilted when obese Americans made a run for the buffet table.
a 5.2 magnitude earthquake south of Hawaii island
