Manson family member Leslie Van Houten is again denied freedom
LA Times ^ | June 5, 2013 | Andrew Blankstein

A parole board on Wednesday rejected Manson family member Leslie Van Houten's 19th attempt to win freedom.

The board also decided she could not seek parole again for five years.

Van Houten, 63, was convicted of murder and conspiracy in the 1969 killings of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their home in Los Feliz. She has repeatedly been denied bids for parole over the last four decades.

“Given the brutality of the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca and Van Houten’s willing and active participation in this evil, pre-planned and violent crime, we are pleased with the parole board’s decision to continue to hold Van Houten accountable for her heinous actions,' L.A. County Dist. Atty. Jackie Lacey said in a statement.

SkyPilot, I’m not going to rag on you for your personal beliefs on this one, but I could never agree to release a woman who stabbed someone in the back between 12 and 20 times.

I base this on the fact that the murdered person will never live at all, let alone be free on the streets.

The families of these victims have spent decades waiting for justice. The death penalties were changed to life in prison with the possibility of parole, and never should have been.

They can fry Leslie with my blessing, but they can’t release her with my agreement.

She may or may not have gotten religion in prison. Don’t do the crime if you can’t pay the time.

I grew up in SoCal right at the perfect age of exposure to the adult world when as a kindergartener I witnessed daily media coverage of both the Manson Family and the Symbionese Liberation Army, among the other ghastly events of the early '70s.

The television we had seemed to be continuously running stories about the Manson trials, Patty Hearst, the search for Bill and Emily Harris, the fiery SLA shootout (I saw them burn to death on good old KTTV Channel 11 out of Los Angeles), the final days of Vietnam and the fall of Saigon, creepy European left wing "Red Army" militants setting off bombs everywhere, Black Panthers on the run, President Nixon facing impeachment, and and all the while every single adult I lived around was riveted to all this shockingly-weird violent insanity on the tube. I'd never regarded Arabs as anything but terrorists in ski masks trying to set the world on fire and kill children.

Everywhere I went there were copies of Bugliosi's Helter Skelter with the middle of the book displaying all the shocking pictures of the Manson murder victims, made to seem even more horrifying to my eyes because the murder victims themselves were 'whited-out' in the crime scene photos. Not to mention all the pictures of the dirty violent Manson hippies and their kooky clothes.

I started grade school when all that stuff was reaching it's peak. Just try to imagine. The culture of the early 1970s had imprinted on me as a young child the fact that hippies were dirty creepy people who were to be avoided and that Apollo astronauts were basically the only decent thing in America -- Well, them and girls who looked like Marcia Brady.

Piss on Leslie Van Houten for what she did. California better never let her out of jail. In fact, when she dies in prison, there needs to be a rule that they bury her body right out there in the prison courtyard. Only thing I can say positive about her is that she helped make me a conservative at a very young age. I swore that when I grew up to be an adult, the first thing I was going to do was buy a gun. So, for that, Leslie, thanks. You dirty evil bitch.

“but she is no longer a threat”

Neither are Leno and Rosemary LaBianca .

A) whether she is a threat is irrelevant
B) whether gang bangers get off easier is also irrelevant, the balance is restored by hanging them, not letting a murderer go free
C) She can’t live long enough to “pay her debt”. The debt cannot be paid. It’s about retribution and punishment-see (A)

I concur that 44 years in prison is enough time served by Leslie Van Houten (I am NOT in favor of letting Tex Watson out). Criminals who have done far worse get out in much less time on “good behavior”. She has been very helpful to the other prisoners and the warden and members of the LaBianca family have supported her parole (she was not at the Tate murders). If she’s let out, she’ll be close to 70 and no threat to anyone.

From what I’ve read she is the most repentant of the “family”. That one who died about a year ago, what was her name? Was it Susan? She was the worst of the bunch.

Thing is if she was released I wonder how she’d ever redeem herself?

That’d work for me but they had their chance and blew it, as smoothsailing wrote, “let the witch rot.”

Christ forgave the murderers that were executed along with Him.

Then Christ can forgive her when she meets him. Until then, she gets man's justice.
I do not mean that flippantly.

When the people she helped slaughter are alive again to enjoy their lives, then she should be set free to enjoy hers. Not one second before.

PS Are you familiar with how brutal these murders were?

L.A. has thousands of gang-bangers of many stripes who go through the revolving doors of courts who have murdered, maimed, raped and robbed many people, not only their own kind.

If you doubt it, just look up the perfectly named Johnny Mata (Spanish for kill) who was recently released while up on a murder charge. He is a lifelong killer who has been in and out many times.

The reason the Manson women killers are still in prison is because this case is so famous and the girls were wild and poor and the murders heinous. They were justified in going to prison and getting the death sentence. California decided to commute the sentences. Ever since OJ, my opinion on Capital Punishment has changed. That murderer walked and will soon be out again. Enough of this, they more than did their best years in prison. Free up the space for more Johnny Mata’s.

Ok, you want her out? Let’s use YOUR house as her half-way house for the first five years. Bet you don’t get a wink of sleep.

She should have been gassed. She’s only alive because the SCOTUS banned capital punishment.

I hear you and saw the same things but I was a young adult, I especially remember the SLA shootout. It probably was channel 11 but I was thinking it might have been 5:)
