Colo. gay discrimination alleged over wedding cake
AP ^ | 6/6/2013 | IVAN MORENO

Posted on 06/06/2013 2:33:40 PM PDT by markomalley

A gay couple is pursuing a discrimination complaint against a Colorado bakery, saying the business refused them a wedding cake to honor their Massachusetts ceremony, and alleging that the owners have a history of turning away same-sex couples.

As more states move to legalize same-sex marriage and civil unions, the case highlights a growing tension between gay rights advocates and supporters of religious freedom.

"Religious freedom is a fundamental right in America and it's something that we champion at the ACLU," said Mark Silverstein, the legal director of the group in Colorado, which filed the complaint on behalf of the couple. "We are all entitled to our religious beliefs and we fight for that. But someone's personal religious beliefs don't justify breaking the law by discriminating against others in the public sphere."

The attorney for Jack Phillips, one of the owners of Masterpiece Cakeshop, sees it differently.

"We don't believe that this is a case about commerce. At its heart, this is a case about conscience," said Nicolle Martin. She said the matter is important because it will serve as an example for future cases across the country as more gay couples gain legal recognitions for their relationships.

What about the religious freedom of the business owners?

Ezekiel's comments are undeniably correct. I will just copy this one part, I recommend reading the whole comment This is exactly why the homosexual agenda is a vicious attack on our Constiutitonal freedoms:

The latest wave of laws on abortion and gay marriage are meant to make it impossible to hold beliefs, religious or otherwise, in contradiction to those of the state. That's a somewhat new phenomenon in the United States, but a familiar one in Europe. And the consequence of these Orwellian measures is the stratification of these societies into three categories.

Anyone wanting on/off any of my pinglists, freepmail me.

The Constitution does not merely protect religious beliefs, it protects "the free exercise thereof" - it protects actions or the choice not to take action. If the totalitarian left really wants to go there, they may try to compel slavery. I hope they will consider what obligation a potential slave owes to those who attempt enslavement: none. The polite response is to refuse service. We have a whole range of options that are far less polite, and they are the last resort if the left demands our active participation against our will.

They specifically wanted to shut down the bakery and send a message, and set a precedent, that everyone must bow to offically sanctioned sodomy.

They’re always doing this stuff. It’s fag political activism, and they’re driven like mad dogs, That’s why they have so much power.

I don’t think it’s because Libertarians are naive. It’s because they’re hedonists themeslves, or for some dark reason, they promote hedonism. That is why the Libertarian party officialy supports the entire spectrum of the “gay” agenda, no holds barred porn, no laws against prostitution, all drug use, all abortion, and open borders. A wild free for all, basically. Anarchy.

So are the homosexual activists seeking out these bakeries just to harass them? I think a bakery who is targeted in this way should file suit for harassment, since they are surely not the ONLY bakery in town that these folks could have gone to, and that bakery not doing their cake certainly wouldn’t hinder their ability to get a cake somewhere else.

Libertarians at one time claimed to be abortion boosters but did not favor government aid to underwrite the murders. Is that still their position?

exactly

the freedom of religion is being destroyed as is other freedoms and the communist back in 63 knew that if they promoted the homosexuals agenda and destroyed the family by promoting homosexuality, divorce and have both parents working then the country would go to crap and the freedom of religion which the communist hate would be destroyed.

Our side , even some on here need to wake up and either speak up , stop being cowardly to this issue or understand that they who say we should not mention social issues and who cares about marriage is also promoting a communist agenda and are certainly not republicans let alone conservatives.

This is exactly why the homosexual agenda is a vicious attack on our Constiutitonal freedoms ~ little jeremiah

Just to clarify... that last [blockquoted] portion of my reply is a quote from Daniel Greenfield's article. He explains why two out of "The Three Types of People You'll Meet in Liberal Hell" are immune from persecution.

The rule of the Party creates three tiers. Those of the Party, the People and the Ghetto. The law only applies to one tier. That of the People. It does not apply to the Party because it makes the laws. It does not apply to the Ghetto, because the Ghetto does not follow the law.

The Ghetto is any tight-knit community with a common ethnic or belief system that maintains group solidarity and is capable of violent protests or mass civil disobedience. Some Ghettos belong to minority groups that are allied with the Party. Other Ghettos however are not. What they all have in common is that they are not really part of the country or culture.

He clearly answers why certain subcultures are and will be able to function freely in opposition to the system (and by extention, free from the wrath of the rainbow mafia). Easier for the Party to bully and control - or rather, shoot - the fish in the barrel, We the People.

By the choice of targets the Party advertises plainly that their enemies are those who are by nature lawful, peaceful, and truthful. God doesn't need to stand in judgment... they do it to themselves. The devil's children aren't too bright. No wonder their abode is called the dark side.

hang on, so these two want a sham in MA but want the cake in CO knowing they would be refused .

OK so this is not about a cake, this is about going after anyone who opposes their agenda.

Now if the media could stop with their agenda and actually do their job then they would have pointed the real facts about this suit and case.

This is about closing people down, destroying them and destroying the first amendment and if anyone thinks this is not a big problem then wake the hell up and stop supporting communism

just said the same thing.

They want a sham in MA but go to a place in CO which has a history of turning these homosexuals away.

this is not about a cake at all or a sham marriage

anyone stating that marriage is not a problem and we should not mention social issues or marriage is supporting a communist agenda and are not republicans or conservatives.

I;m sick of these people especially from the north east moving to places in the south or Midwest or even pushing their north east communist homosexuals agenda onto the country.

Their sham is not legal here, they could have gone elsewhere in queer MA but no they went to a place knwing they would be refused so they could sue and also they did this to Catholic charities too over adoption and now because of their selfish agenda kids in MA cannot be adopted by Catholic charities

yea well done homosexuals, communists and you supporters, there is more to the country than your own pockets and money

so why not get some good ole boys from down here, get them to MA and have them go to queer bars only to be refused at the door, infact get their women with the good ole boys and start kissing at their places and then they can sue the queers for being refused to enter the bars.

Or go to their homo cruises knowing we’d be refused and then sue them and lets see how they like their own tactics at them

maybe if our side actually spoke on this issue instead of being cowards, people like Hannity reported on this and showed videos of their freak parades and how they mock others who oppose them then people might wake up

I guess I'm confused, They are getting "married" in MA, where it's "legal" But of all places in the Boston area to choose from, they decided to choose some obscure Colorado bakery that doesn't cotton to such views?

How in the holy F would that be a plausible reason?

Do they expect the cake to be shipped to MA?

I mean geez my wife and I got married, and it was a big deal to make sure the bakery could safely get the cake across town.

It would be assinine to even request a cake made 8 states over.

This is pure harassment, and in this case I really think the gays have bit off more than they can chew.

Nobody, gay or straight will buy the story that they just had no other options other than to ask for a cake made 2000 miles away.

If the cake were to even make it to MA in one piece, it would be stale as hell.

SCREW these people. They are nothing but a$$holes. And for no good reason whatsoever.
