Carole Longhorn, 65, took a number of unusual safety stops after discovered the explosive

She hit the metal object with a spade while she was gardening at her home and when she looked closer realised it was in the shape of a shell.

Once she had dug it up she took it inside their house and left it on the coffee table, before Mr Longhorn heard a rattle and turned around to see his wife washing mud off the bomb in the sink.

Police were called and experts confirmed they believed that the bomb was still live. They took it to a nearby quarry where a controlled explosion was carried out.

Mrs Longhorn said: "I called my husband to come and have a look at it, but he wouldn't so I brought it indoors."

Mr Longhorn said: "She took a few precautions. She put a plastic seat on the top in case it went off.

"I heard a rattle in the kitchen and saw she was washing it in the blooming sink. You can imagine what I said to her."

A bomb disposal squad from RAF Wittering, Cambridgeshire, were called to the couple's home in Melton Constable, Norfolk, following the discovery on Wednesday.

Mr Longhorn added: "The bomb disposal team said it was live and that we were very lucky."

After the bomb was destroyed Mr Longhorn said: "It was brilliant. The ground shook - you could feel the shockwaves come across and bump into you.

"The bloke said to me: 'Tell the wife if she finds any more, put them in a nice neat heap and we'll deal with them all at once'."

A spokesman at RAF Wittering said the 4.5in (11cm) diameter projectile "more than likely" dated back to World War II.

Somehow this reminded me of the Brits embracing Islam as though it is a harmless unknown that warrants tender care

Take it into your home and then...

I hope Mrs. Longhorn watched them detonate the bomb. Maybe next time she’ll have more sense.

depending on the size might look good in the garden...I picked up the nose cone of one of those big navy ship guns at a garage sale years ago...my kids laugh, but I think it looks neat...about 2 1/2 feet high and is quite heavy...I have carted that thing to the last 3 houses I’ve lived in..That thing is sure heavy......GG

I liked Danger UXB so much when it first came out, I bought the entire DVD set. Great show — amazing watching the transformation of they guys who had a virtual death sentence, plus the information about German technology and the measures the Brits devised to defeat the German technology.

When I was a twelve year old Army brat living in Okinawa, I once found a crusty old artillery shell that I promptly took home and hid under the house.

One of my little brothers ratted me out, and while walking home one day, I saw the bomb disposal squad outside my house with the area cordoned off.

Sure enough, the dang thing was unexploded ordinance from WWII. I got a stern talking to from my dad, who told me later that the bomb unit detonated the thing over the ocean.
