What to Make of a [Global] Warming Plateau
New York Times ^ | June 10, 2013 | JUSTIN GILLIS

Posted on 06/10/2013 4:16:03 PM PDT by grundle

As unlikely as this may sound, we have lucked out in recent years when it comes to global warming.

The rise in the surface temperature of earth has been markedly slower over the last 15 years than in the 20 years before that. And that lull in warming has occurred even as greenhouse gases have accumulated in the atmosphere at a record pace.

The slowdown is a bit of a mystery to climate scientists.

The situation highlights important gaps in our knowledge of the climate system

Hilarious, how do you “luck out” of what they claim is an irresistible proven scientific fact???

CO2 levels are a function of global temperatures, not a cause, because the oceans are a massive CO2 sink. When the ocean temperature rises, CO2 is expelled. When ocean temperatures fall, CO2 is absorbed. You can see it in microcosm with the Mauna Luoa data.

Ah I see the science must still be settled. The new data is "luck" not actual empirical readings.

This really amusing article illustrates the twisted logic the alarmists are left with now. There hasn't been significant warming in the last 15 years, which is very strange and we need to understand why. But the "deniers" who point that fact out are still wrong. The "heat" has to be somewhere, you see, because the alarmists' calculations couldn't be wrong. Maybe it's in the deep sea? Yeah, that's the ticket.

Or maybe it's hiding under our beds?

Puleeeeze, NYT, leave science to trained adults who have achieved rear degrees in real science.

And, shove your toy science up your collective smelly Obamas.

That’s “real,” not “rear.”

An Obamadork moment.

I just read the article from the Drudge linked at had a good laugh. The writer keeps trying to spin it to support his warped belief in a science that is not a science at all.

He won’t admit that the politicians and scientists who have lied to us for 20 years have no clue as to what they are talking about. All the lemmings that you and I meet everyday in our classrooms, at parties, or see in the media have been blinded by the HOT AIR that has been spewed by the Al Gores of the world They make fun of the “deniers” but it is they who are in denial.

The slowdown is a bit of a mystery to climate scientists.

The mystery is your magical models, and you're not scientists you are Marxists.

We've been telling you that for more than 15 years. But you had to believe Algore instead of us.

These people can’t understand that this is NOT sciene, and regardless of how many times they repeat it,, Most real Scientists DO Not buy this crap, they will tell you that there is no where near enought data to prove this out one way or the other.
There are only a very few getting grant money that tow the line.

If you end up using the phrase “ some don’t BELIEVE” in global warming youre admitting its not science, it’s a belief system.
Science is to do with Provable Matters of Fact

And I thought we weren’t supposed to consider the temperature outside when discussing global warming.
When it snows 3 freaking feet in New York in May, that has nothing to do with Global Warming.

But when it’s really hot in the Summer, Now THAT’S definately to do with Global Warming.

Liberals are clueless idiots

Indeed. Before the argument was that if you denied the AGW forecast and warnings then you were ignorant of reality and how GW worked, while failure of the forecasts to match reality is now attributed to ignorance of how GW works.

I would write a sarcastic comment but I am under 20 - 20 = 0 feet of water caused by Global warming here in West Texas .... oops, maybe not.

Yes, in the short run. The CO2 seasonal wiggle in your graph is a function of the biosphere more than the ocean, but they do coincide since the earth is closest to the sun in the northern hemisphere winter when there are the fewest plants to take up CO2. So the ocean in the south hemisphere is warmer expelling CO2 and the plants in the north are not there to take it up.

In the northern hemisphere summer the plants take up CO2 and the cooler southern hemisphere ocean absorbs CO2 and we see the trough by the NH fall.

The way to think about the ocean contribution is roughly 5-10 ppm per degree C. Since there is a rise of 5-10 ppm every decade or so, the long term rise is not from ocean warming but extra manmade CO2. But as you say the ocean has turned into a massive sink and if we stopped the CO2 would drop quickly (less than 40 years) half way back to equilibrium.
