Vandals knock over monument for Michelle Obama ancestor

REX, Ga. — Police are trying to figure out who knocked over a monument dedicated to an ancestor of first lady Michelle Obama.

“When I saw it, I shed a few tears,” Vicki Smith told Channel 2’s Linda Stouffer.

Smith helped get the monument to Rex. It’s a tribute to Melvinia Shields, the great-great-great grandmother of Obama. Shields was born into slavery in 1844 and later moved to Georgia.

Clayton County Commissioner Sonna Singleton said the monument company will have to lift the heavy stone to check for cracks after someone pushed it off the foundation block.

“It was our little source of pride because here we are in little old Rex, Georgia, and we had ties to the White House, so there's pride in us for that,” Singleton said.

The concept of the statue is ridiculous. Anyone remember seeing a statue of Martha Washington??

Why a monument in the first place? George Washington Carver yes but Rex - what did he contribute other than be the ancestor to Michelle Robinson. Needless money spent!

My great great grandfather came over from Germany just before the Civil War and fought for the Union Army. Where is his statute? (It is a grave marker in Glenwood City, St. Croix County Wisconsin)

While I think that the instantiation of the monument is an attempt at deification and creation/perpetuation of an Obama Monarchy, I take it for what it is. A very expensive gravesight amidst other graves and countryside nowhere near its status. An inviting target for vandalism. Kinda reminds me of the fabulism the MSM has attached to the Kennedy Mystique, Camelot and all that rot. Only with this, is the creation American’s First Black Royalty.

Rex is the ‘white’ part of Clayton County for the most part.

Yes, by a great-great-great-grandmother. Tenuous at best. If they put it back up, I hope it somehow gets knocked over again.

The concept of the statue is ridiculous. Anyone remember seeing a statue of Martha Washington??

Someone finally made a bronze of Mrs. Washington for Mount Vernon's new visitor center that opened in 2006. Other than that, you can get a Martha Washington figurine on eBay this morning if you act fast.

I don't much care for the body language in this statue. It appears based on her portraits when she was old, but wants us to see her as a young mother. George himself looked a great deal younger than this statue implies when the children were little. Martha Washington was a very strong personality who aided her husband substantially in the birth of the republic, especially in the welfare of soldiers of the Revolution. She also had to manage one of the most prosperous plantations in the colonies for long periods while her husband was often away. In addition to gardens, stables, barns, crops and farm workers, Mount Vernon had a large fishery, and a factory-like building for salting and packing the fish for export to Europe and other states. And there was routine hosting of the many officials of the various states who traveled through to New York, Philadelphia or Richmond and stayed over, and the movers and shakers of colonial, revolutionary and post-colonial U.S.A. Their diaries revealed that the two of them almost never ate alone.

The monument was erected a year ago, most likely to celebrate Michelle Obama’s ancestors. That is much more scary than some vandal knocking it over. We are in the age of emperors again. Obama will have his face on a coin next.

I am indifferent to Michelle Obama as long as she stays out of our lives (which she doesn’t do often enough). I am skeptical of this alleged vandalism, which could easily be a false flag as others have commented. If the responsible person is identified, whether pro-Obama or anti-Obama, I don’t care about their motives - vandals should go to prison for a time comparable to thieves guilty of stealing something of equal value if local law permits that penalty. Five years behind bars for pushing over a status? Why not?

A statue to the obscure relative of the affirmative-action, equal-opportunity Worst Lady, mooch-elle? PULEEESE! That community needs a check-up-from-the-neck-up.
