Without defending the high school principal in this, I have to ask if this student graduates from the Naval Academy then what is he going to do if he is given an order he doesn’t like?

If you’re going to correct someone’s spelling, I “beliebe” you’d better be pretty sure of your own first. ;)

Apples v Oranges! The Annaoplis grad takes an oath to follow orders. Last time I checked thesame was not required to graduate from high school. Additionally, “I was just following orders” is not a defense when the order is illegal or immoral, oath or no oath.

So he lied to the school.

How would you feel if you went to the graduation and the speaker was a Muslim who had a preapproved speech that he threw in the trash as he stepped up to the mic - and then proceeded to give a half hour speech on Mohammed and Koran.

Would he be given the same Free Speech support here on FR?

“I have to ask if this student graduates from the Naval Academy then what is he going to do if he is given an order he doesn’t like?”

An order he doesn’t like,,such as spy on US citizens in violation of the 4th Amendment? Like fire on TEA protesters? Like arrest TEA leaders under NDAA for criticizing the dear leader? Like ensure the trains full of Jews are given priority?

Zee orders must alvays be followed!/

You have the choice of getting up and calling him/her down or leaving in droves. You are not chained to the chair. I don’t recall where anyone in this story left.

That is the risk you take ever time you attend any event where someone speaks. I have stood up in political speeches being given and walked out muttering contention as I went.

My guess is the latter. Looks like he just rolled out of bed.

Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the politically correct twits at the Academy withdrew this young man’s appointment...

Absolutely. At one time, the Naval Academy would've tossed any letter from the school principal, and admitted the student immediately. Of course back in that time, a student would never have received such a threat for a reference to their beliefs.

That said, those at the Academy also know that you should be held to your word. If the speech was pre-approved, those rules for its approval were valid and consented to by the student. It's not the student's privilege to change the outcome afterward.

The Academy is for grooming military and political leaders, but there's a right way and a wrong way to show leadership. As in all branches, it's about keeping your chain of command in the loop. This speech was not about some renegade sea captain going against the grain to beat the bad guy. The principal was the "Captain" here, regardless of his petty desire to uphold the poltically correct agenda.

I don't agree with the PC agenda, and I detest public schools, but if you're going to operate in that environment, you've got to play by their rules.

If his speech included strong support of the US Constitution, yes.

He presented a speech that was approved and then gave another.

He was not a good little Nazi. He spoke ideas that were disapproved by his Politoffizier. Dreißig tage im kühler.

Yet another way to express himself in a few words:

"About that letter....my lawyer says 'go ahead'".

what is he going to do if he is given an order he doesn’t like?

Resign from the Navy/Marines. State that he can not follow an order he deems is counter to his interpretation of the Constitution and go to Leavenworth if a court prosecutes him.

My question to those calling this kid a liar and dishonorable is this. If a man holds a gun to your head and tells you to renounce God and that you will no longer worship him in any manner that can be viewed by the public, will you comply? Because that's what is being done and no amount of mealy mouthed pussy footing can sugar coat what school administrators, military/federal bureaucrats and the courts are doing.

My grandfather came to this country after fighting a war in Mexico about this very question. He was a Cristero and this whole anti religious movement is basically a means to drive Christians out of any federal/state jobs including the military. If you have no conscience or grounding in morality but only that of the rules of the state, then we are well on our way to the Nazi/Communist state that we feared. It's over when even the state and the police are seen as more of a threat than the criminals.

As a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, I would say as a Naval officer he would be required to carry out the lawful orders of his superiors. Of course, he is not presently a Naval officer and the application of military standards to a high school graduation is ridiculous. The young man obviously has passion and will likely make a fine Naval officer.

The school would never have cut the mic on someone speaking of their believe in the Koran.

We’d have never seen it in the news.

In an earlier America, he would become the guest at a tar-and-feathers party and would be ridden out of town on a rail.
