Jenny Price believes everyone should have access to the public beaches in Malibu
Beachfront homeowners in the exclusive L.A. neighborhood of Malibu are up in arms about a new smartphone app which provides anyone using it with evaluable information about how to get to the area’s hard to reach public beaches.
Environmental writer Jenny Price passionately believes that everyone deserves access to the area's public beaches but with 20 of Malibu's 27 miles of coastline lined with private developments trying to access the beaches has long been a complicated business.
Homeowners in Malibu - include some of the wealthiest and most famous people in the country – have long used a variety of means to keep the beaches to themselves including padlocks, gates, menacing signs, security guards and lawsuits.

All beaches in Hawaii are open to the public with the exception of some military locations.

a really nice large and sort of secluded beach is north of Malibu at Leo Correo State Beach Park, about 15 miles north of Malibu - it even has a small campground on the east side of the Pacific Coast Highway, from which you can walk to the beech
one year we went to Leo Correo with a large group
we covered one section of the beach along the cliff
using an old Parachute
the tide was a little high at the time
and you had to pass through a tunnel in the rock
to get from the main part of the beach
to the little camp we made for our party
we secured the parachute to the rock of the cliff with
some old railroad ties
we did not keep that section to ourselves
we were a large group but we let anybody
join our area and our partying too
the parachute caught the attention of someone
they sent a helicopter to look at our site
and then a Park Ranger
who thought our canopy was ingenuous
and said he’d let his duty to make us take it down slide
until it got dark
and we told him we’d leave by then
and he parted saying just keep the beach clean
everyone remembers it as one of the
best beach parties we had in the 1960s
P.S. It was our Methodist Church college age youth group plus invited friends and our long time MYF leader.

I am amazed there are freepers in the Santa Cruz area... they must be the real social outcasts, since EVERYTHING ELSE goes... It seemed ordinary to find people passed out with needles stuck in their arms along the tracks.
There are ranchers in the mountain states who close off access roads to the National Forest. It has been a problem for years.
That surely must be the exact beach I was describing... was a couple miles south of Davenport... I still have pictures on my phone... need to upload a couple me thinks...
It is a nice beach. Can get a little crowded with all the available parking.
Some nice, more secluded state beaches just south of there are El Pescador, Peidras, and El Matador. Limited parking and a hike down bluffs, but never crowded. One is just south of hag Strisand's house should you want to stroll up there and pay your respects.
Really? When did that happen, that all California beaches went public?
When I lived in California back in the early 80s, there were still beaches that were private.

I suspect a lot of these snobs are the same as those preaching unilateral nuclear disarmament, but they have a problem with the CCC and the hoi polloi.

Recall that Jim Rockford lived on the beach in Malibu in his tenement on wheels.
One back story in the series was that he drew the ire of the local residents, ostensibly because of the nature of his business, but it was a not-so-subtle dig at the real-life Hollyweird elitists who inhabited (inhabit) Malibu.

Of course, you still had to somehow get to that strip of beach or rocks somehow, and there was nothing stating that landowners had to give you right of way. The public access beach passageways in Malibu were commonly blocked by the residents.
The public has access to all (except some military) beaches in Hawaii.
When I lived in LA, I was appalled to find that there were kids in East LA who had never been to the beach. Just a short drive down the Santa Monica Freeway, but somehow it never happened.

Oh u betcha. heheh. I am a very happy contrarian. When I'm not out on the water or at the winery or build sand castles I like to go to river street and annoy the petition-grubbers and eco-communists and blow the minds of the street people with my extremist views...

the beach I was referring to was just 15 mi north of Mailbu
Davenport is north of Santa Cruz, which is hours north of Mailibu

I spelled Leo Carillio wrong
it was interesting that Mapquest found it anyway
my days at Leo Carillo were in the late 1960s
we seldom encountered it as very busy
at that time
we figured out good fortune came from
more people not wanting to travel up there;
when we’d go surfing
it was usually down in the Oceanside/San Clemente area
that was also where we could have bonfires on the beach at night
(I grew up - 8-18 - up in San Bernardino county)
