New York police sued over surveillance of Muslims

The New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the New York Police Department over its surveillance of Muslim communities, accusing the police of trampling on religious freedoms and constitutional guarantees of equality.

The surveillance by the NYPD's intelligence division has extended beyond New York City's five boroughs into neighboring New Jersey and other nearby states. The police department says that surveillance of Muslims is legal under an earlier federal court order.

The lawsuit is the latest skirmish in an ongoing battle between the NYPD and civil liberties advocates over the department's aggressive policing tactics - including its stop-and-frisk practices, which are the subject of a separate federal lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, in Brooklyn, seeks to put an end to the NYPD's surveillance of Muslims, the destruction of all records on individuals created as a result of the program and the appointment of an independent monitor to oversee the department.

"When a police department turns law-abiding people into suspects because they go to a mosque and not a church or a synagogue, it violates our Constitution's guarantees of equality and religious freedom," said Hina Shamsi, director of the American Civil Liberties Union National Security Project. She called the NYPD monitoring "suspicionless surveillance" and "religious profiling."

Why in heavens name do the liberals/weak repbs want to risk such

a catastrophic event as this which could result in street terror.

Risk? RISK???

It's not a risk for them. Any terrorist attack on us is not a a problem to them, it is a golden opportunity for them.

The game isn't 'protect and serve' it's 'prosecute and serveil'. A daycare center full of dead babies isn't the slightest problem to them if they can use it to pass more of the repressive laws they have sitting in their filing cabinets waiting for the next attack driven opportunity.

They may as well physically write the laws in the actual blood of murdered children.

So the ACLU will be suing Congress et al, on behalf of the American Citizens when the Illegal Immigrant Bill gives a special class of perks/get out of jail cards/benefits/no IRS back taxes/ which violates the EQUALITY guarenteed by the Constitution? (/s) ACLU=American Communist Liberal Union

I watched the General's testimony; it didn't mention muslims, specifically. Closest he got was "potential terrorist events":

We are so infiltrated and compromised, I'm not sure we'll ever recover even if we make it thru the next 3½-yrs of 0muslim&Co.

No kidding.

Imagine 100,000 muslim jihadis here on H-1B, L-1, refugee and expired student visas working in power plants, fertilizer factories, refineries, chemical manufacturers, hospitals, utilities, dams, pharmaceutical formulators, web hub server farms, municipal water supply facilities, sewage treatment plants, meat packing and food processing plants, driving HazMat trucks...

Remember when the Vietcong took over Huế? They were able to round up every government official, march them all off into the jungle and kill every last one of them in one single night.

They knew exactly where they lived, who they visited, where they shopped and where they ate dinner, and when.

How you ask?

The cabbies had been providing the Vietcong daily reports on their every move for years in advance.

Soooo, where do most of the cabbies in your berg come from? In Washington DC, it's Somalia...

Just because we've forgotten the lessons of Huế and the lessons of the Sepoy Rebellion's "The Perfect Day" doesn't mean our enemies have.

Wiki seems mute on The Perfect Day. That information used to be readily available there. Now it's barely mentioned.

And now I hear we're going to import a whole pressure cooker pot full of Syrian "refugees"...

Why can’t there be a class action suit against Islam itself????

They should be sued for NOT monitoring indoctrination centers.

where did they dare mention TROP?

Good point. I was just filling in the obvious gaps. Although they did mention a guy named Najibullah Zazi trying to blow up the NY Subway. Perhaps that's a Ukranian name and I am just jumping to conclusions....

A friend in the NYPD had to leave a mutual friend’s funeral because of bomb-making material found in an apartment belonging to - wait for it - Mohammedans. This was well before September 11, 2001. I know I’m not saying anything new here when I point out how insane it is to stop investigating the source of terrorism because it might hurt the feelings of the families of the terrorists. Our lives are more important than their feelings, but not apparently to those who we Americans have given the responsibility of protecting us to.
