Farm Bill Defeat Signals Trouble for Immigration Reform

Members of Congress are listening to you.

Yesterday the U.S. House rejected a nearly trillion-dollar food stamp and farm bill — an important victory for taxpayers and a stinging rebuke for the Washington establishment.

Sixty-two Republicans bucked their own party to vote against the bloated bill. Coupled with a large bloc of Democrats who wanted more spending on food stamps, the bipartisan opposition was enough to sink the measure. It’s unclear if or when House leaders will bring the bill back to the floor for a vote.

Remember, there are no permanent victories in Washington. But this is one for conservatives to celebrate as a win for taxpayers and a reaffirmation of fiscal responsibility.

Rejection of the farm bill also has significant implications for the debate happening on immigration reform. As senators continue to play political games to justify their support for amnesty, conservatives in the House will no doubt look to the farm bill debate as an indication of what can happen when the American people are informed and engaged.

Nearly a year ago, Heritage Action CEO Michael Needham and Representative Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) wrote in the Wall Street Journal that the unholy alliance between food stamps and agriculture policy must end.

Congress failed to take that advice, preferring to stick with the status quo. The farm bill was not only loaded with expensive programs and subsidies, but it would have also locked in President Obama’s massive expansion of spending on food stamps.

Lawmakers now have a chance to get it right. They would be wise to refocus their efforts on real reforms to our antiquated farm policy and food stamp program. That begins by splitting the farm bill into separate legislation on agriculture and food stamp policy.

Any bill that guarantees amnesty — as the Gang of Eight’s does — fundamentally undermines efforts to secure the border.

“Democrats who wanted more spending on food stamps”

Bold liberal economic policy in action!

I'm not sure the dynamics of that vote are so cut and dried. Enough conservatives who did not like the amount of spending joined with a much larger group of democRATs who wanted much, much more spending. Their interests are diametrically opposed and it will be curious to see which group decides that half a loaf is better than none and decides to vote with the GOPe.

For example, would the RATs ask for a do-over in the hopes of avoiding a bill with larger cuts? Will the 60 or so Conservatives accept a bill with additional modest cuts to stave off the RATs? And is it all theater because Bonehead will appoint the conferees who will, npi, give away the farm?

FWIW, I have decided to start giving to Heritage for Action, the political action group connected to Heritage. Contributions are NOT tax deductible but they are allowed to directly politicize....

I quit giving to the RNC a long time ago. I have given to Sarah PAC, Jim DeMint’s Senate conservative PAC, some pro-life groups, and now monthly to Heritage Action.

What do “food stamps” have to do with farming and a farm bill. These BILLS are so far out of control (1000s of pages long...myriads of uncontrollable laws...and virtually impossible to monitor), as a Congressman, I would absolutely vote NO to any and all.

Exactly ! The framers never envisioned these big rollup bills where you can hide porkbarrel spending under the name of another bill.

If we need food stamps lets make it its own stand alone program.

Problem is, just like the government buying cheese, it's all about shifting gov dollars to ADM and Con Agra.

In return for democratic campain support kickbacks.

Any 8th grade educated Nebraskan can see this. Other states, I'm not so sure.
